ThetopicscoveredintheTOEICtestareconnectedwiththeworkingworld.Forexample,generalbusiness,manufacturing,finance,personnel,purchasing,technology,property,offices,travel,diningout,entertainment,andhealth.Youdonotneedtohavespecialistknowledgeofanyoftheseareas,butitwillhelpyouprepareforthetestifyougetusedtothistypeofmaterial.Readawidevarietyofbusinesstextslikecatalogs,trainingmanuals,applicationforms,trainschedules,andmenus.

Itisimportanttolistentothewholeofeachstatementcarefully.Partofastatementmaybetrue,butnotallofit.Astatementmustbecompletelytruetobethecorrectanswer.
Example:

Thisstatementisincorrectbecauseitisonlypartlytrue.Heissittingonabench,butheisinthestreet,notinapark.
Whenyouarechoosingwhichstatementisthecorrectanswer,becarefulofwordsthathaveameaningwhichisconnectedwithwhatisinthepicture—theymaybetheretomisleadyou!
Forexample,ifthepictureshowsacar,andthereisastatementwiththewordchauffeurinit,thismayleadyoutothinkthisisthecorrectanswerevenifitisnot.ThisappliestoPart2,3,and4also.
Example:
Thechauffeurisgettinginthecar.
Thepicturehasacarinit,andthewordchauffeurisconnectedwithcars.However,thisisnotthecorrectanswerbecausethepersoninthepictureisnotgettinginacar.Heiswashingthecar.

Question-ResponseTips
AlwayslistentoALLtheanswerchoicesbeforeanswering.Theremaybemorethanoneanswerchoicethatseemscorrect,orananswerchoicetomisleadyou,sowaituntilyouhaveheardthemallbeforeyoudecidewhichoneiscorrect.

Listencarefullyforquestionwordslikewhat,where,when,who,which,andhowatthebeginningofthequestions.Thesetellyouwhatkindofresponseisneeded.Ifthequestiondoesnotbeginwithaquestionword,thenitneedsayesornotypeanswer.
Example:
Whereareyougoingonvacation?
Thisquestionbeginswithwhere,sothecorrectresponsewillprobablycontainaplace,likeI'mgoingtoAustralia.
IsitOKifIpaybycreditcard?
Thisquestiondoesnotbeginwithaquestionword,sothecorrectresponsewillprobablycontainyesorno,likeYessir,that'llbefine.
However,rememberthatsometimespeopledonotknow,orarenotsureoftheanswertoaquestion.SothecorrectanswertoanytypeofquestioncouldalsobearesponsewhichexpressesuncertaintylikeIthinkso,Ihaven'tdecidedyet,orItmightdo.
Becarefulofquestionsthattrytomisleadyoubyusingorreferringtowordsthatsoundthesameorsimilar,buthavedifferentmeanings.Forexample,wordslikewriteandrightwhichhavethesamepronunciation,hungryandangrywhichhaveasimilarpronunciation,andbook(thingyouread)andbook(toreserve)whichhavethesamepronunciationandspelling.Listencarefullyforthemeaningofthequestionandtheresponses,notjustthesoundofthewords.ThisalsoappliestoPart1.

Thewordwearispronouncedthesameasthewordwhere.So,ifyoudidnotlistencarefullyforthemeaningofthequestion,youcouldthinkthatAisthecorrectresponsebecauseittellsyouwherethepartyis.However,thecorrectresponseneedstotellyouwhatclothesthepersonisgoingtoweartotheinterview,soBmustbethecorrectanswer.
Havealookatthequestionbeforeyoulistentotheconversation.Ifyoualreadyknowwhatquestionyouhavetoanswer,itwillmakeiteasierforyoutopickouttheinformationfromtheconversationthatyouneedtoanswerit.ThisappliestoPart4too.

Ifyouhavereadthequestionfirst,youwillknowthatyoujusthavetolistenoutforcluesthattellyouwhatthewoman'soccupationis,notanythingelse.Thecluesarethewordsdoublerooms,fully-booked,andtwinroomwhichareallconnectedwithahotel,soCmustbethecorrectanswer.
Focusonthewordsintherecordingthatarestressedbecausethesewillgiveyouthemainideaoftheconversation.StressedwordsinEnglishareusuallynouns,verbs,adjectives,andadverbs,becausethesearethewordsthatcontainthemostinformation.Wordslikearticles,prepositions,pronouns,andconjunctionsthatcontainmuchlessinformationusuallyhavelittleornostress.ThisappliestoParts1,2,and4too.
Example:
WeneedtofinishthatreportbyFriday.
Thewordsthataremostlikelytobestressedinthissentencearetheverbsneedandfinish,andthenounsreport,andFriday.Thesecontainthemostimportantinformation.
Somequestionsmayaskyouaboutfactsandsomequestionsmayaskyouaboutaspeaker'semotionsorrelationship.Forexample,"Howdoesthewomanfeel?
"or"Whatistherelationshipbetweenthemanandthewoman?
"Theanswertothesetypesofquestionswillnotbegivendirectlyintheconversation.Youwillhavetoinfertheanswertothesequestionsbasedonwhatthespeakerssay,theirtoneofvoice,thelevelofformalitytheyuse,andsoon.
