Aminoacids(p36)
Aminoacidsaremoleculescontaininganaminegroup,acarboxylicacidgroupandasidechainthatvariesbetweendifferentaminoacids.
Thesemoleculesareparticularlyimportantinbio-chemistry,wherethistermreferstoalpha-aminoacidswiththegeneralformulaH2NCHR-COOH,whereRisanorganicsubstituent.
Aminoacidsarecriticaltolife,andtheirmostimportantfunctionistheirvarietyofrolesinmetabolism.
Oneparticularlyimportantfunctionisasthebuildingblocksofproteins,whicharelinearchainsofaminoacids.
Everyproteinischemicallydefinedbythisprimarystructure,itsuniquesequenceofaminoacidresidues,whichinturndefinethethree-dimensionalstruc-tureoftheprotein.
Aminoacidsareusuallyclassifiedbythepropertiesoftheirsidechainintofourgroups.Thesidechaincanmakeanaminoacidaweakacidoraweakbase,andahydrophileifthesidechainispolarorahydrophobeifitisnonpolar.
Aminoacidsarethestructuralunitsthatmakeupproteins.Theyjointogethertoformshortpolymerchainscalledpeptidesorlongerchainscalledeitherpolypeptidesorproteins.
Thesepolymersarelinearandunbranched,witheachaminoacidwithinthechainattachedtotwoneighbouringaminoacids.
Twenty-twoaminoacidsarenaturallyincorporatedintopolypeptidesandarecalledproteinogenicorstandardaminoacids.22个氨基酸自然的链接为多肽链被称为蛋白氨基酸或是标准氨基酸。
Ofthesetwenty-two,twentyaredirectlyencodedbytheuniversalgeneticcode.Theremainingtwo,selenocysteineandpyrrolysine,areincorporatedintoproteinsbyuniquesyntheticmechanisms.
An essentialaminoacidor indispensableacidisan aminoacid thatcannotbesynthesized denovo bytheorganism(usuallyreferringtohumans),andthereforemustbesuppliedinthediet.
Eightaminoacidsaregenerallyregardedasessentialforhumans:
phenylalanine,valine,threoninetryptophanisoleucine,methionineleucine,and lysine。
Additionally,cystein(orsulphur-containingaminoacids),tyrosine(oraromaticamimoacids),histidineandargininearerequiredbyinfantsandgrowingchildren
Essentialaminoacidsaresocallednotbecausetheyaremoreimportanttolifethantheothers,butbecausethebodydosenotsynthesizethem,makingitessentialtoincludetheminone’sdiet
Inaddition,theaminoacidsarginine,cysteine,glycine,glutamine,histidine,proline,serine,and
tyrosineareconsideredconditionallyessential,meaningtheyarenot
normallyrequiredinthediet,butmustbesuppliedexogenouslytospecificpopulationsthatdonotsynthesizeitinadequateamounts.
Thedistinctionbetweenessentialandnon-essentialaminoacidsissomewhatunclear,assomeaminoacidscanbeproducedfromothers.
Thesulfur-containingaminoacids,methionineandhomocysteine,canbeconvertedintoeachotherbutneithercanbesynthesizeddenovoinhumans.
Likewise,cysteinecanbemadefromhomocysteinebutcannotbesynthesizedonitsown.
So,forconvenience,sulfur-containingaminoacidsaresometimesconsideredasinglepoolofnutritionally-equivalentaminoacidsasarethe aromatic aminoacidpair, phenylalanine and tyrosine.
Likewise arginine, ornithine,and citrulline,whichareinterconvertiblebythe ureacycle,areconsideredasinglegroup.
Essentialfattyacids(p47)
Essentialfattyacids,orFFAS,arefatteracidsthatcannotbeconstructedwithinanorganism(generalallreferencesaretohumans)fromothercomponentsbyanyknownchemicalpathways,andthereforemustbeobtainedfromthediet.
Thetermreferstofattyacidsinvolvedinbiologicalprocesses,andnotthosewhichmayjustplayaroleasfuel.
Itispossibletheamountsrequiredinthediet(ifany)areoverestimated.itisalsopossibletheycanbeunderestimatedasorganismscanstillsurviveinnon-ideal,malnourishedconditions.
