毛姆笔下精神探索者形象拉里可以说是其思想的集大成者,这个人物形象使作家从一名智者提高到哲人的高度。
Larry,whoistheMaugham’sspiritexplorerimage,turnthewriterfromawiseuptotheheightofaphilosopher.毛姆以20世纪的英国哲学家维特根斯坦为原型,TakingtheBritishphilosopherofthe20thcenturyastheprototype,Maughamputhisthinkingofworldandlifeintolarry’sspiritintheprocessofexploration.将自己对世界与人生的思考凝聚于拉里的探索过程之中,毋庸置疑地灌注了他的心路历程。

为此他离家出走,而且解除了与伊莎贝尔的婚约。
拉里首先去了巴黎,他要在这里弄清楚上帝是否存在,他说“我想弄清楚为什么世界上会有恶。
我想要知道我的灵魂是不是不灭,还是我死后一切都完了。
”
在巴黎他读了很多书,如斯宾诺莎、威廉·詹姆斯、鲁斯布鲁克、笛卡尔等等。
他从读书中汲取营
养,平复自己迷茫、躁动不安的心灵。
他向往一种充实的、令人兴奋的、经验丰
富、没有止境的精神生活。
这种生活就如同飞上蓝天后,只有无限的空间包围着自己,而自己沉醉其间,将世界上的任何权利与荣誉都视若敝履一样。
他结识了许多作家、画家、学生和工人,他去煤矿做工、从事体力劳动,他游历了德国、中国、缅甸和印度,从而增长了见识。
在印度,他跟随瑜伽师读书、散步、冥想、休息,并在东方的神秘中得到了宁静与安乐。
多年后辗转回到巴黎,拉里简直像一个乞丐,然而他的眼神依然那么清澈,“他的眉宇之
间可以觉察到一种只能称之为超然的派头”,带有一种宁静的意味。
这宁静已经深入他的灵魂,和他融为一体,使他超然于我们、脱离俗世。

他是一个思想者和哲人。
小说中,毛姆曾这样评价拉里:

拉里虽然是个圣徒,但他并不想一味地做个世俗的局外人或者隐士而独善其身。
他利用瑜伽师传授给他的神奇功夫为格雷·马图林治好了他的头疼病,并竭力帮助格雷恢复信心,从证券市场破产的现实中重新振作起来。
为了使索菲·麦唐纳从丧夫的悲痛中解脱出来,拉里决定与这个酗酒吸毒的堕落女人结婚,但这无关乎爱情,只是为了拯救一个受害者、坠入深渊的迷途羔羊。
他的心接近自然,贴近信仰。
通过印度教,他明白了“宇宙没有开头,没有结尾,而是永远从成长到平衡,从平衡到衰落,从衰落到解体,从解体到成长,如是以至无穷”,而且人类只有在自己的灵魂里才能寻找到安慰和鼓励。
