TrainingaSearchandRescue(SAR)Dog
SearchandRescue(SAR)dogsarespeciallytrainedtofindandsavemissingorinjuredpeople,butisitdone?
TotrainSARdogs,peoplepretendtobe“lost”sothedogscan“find”them.FriendsofSpringfield’sSARTeamoftenfindthemselvesgoingintothewoodsandstayingthereuntilatraineedogfindsthem.Aspeoplewalkalong,upto10,000tinybitsofmaterialcontainingtheirownparticularsmellareleftbehindeveryminute.SARdogscaneasilydetectthesebitsofscene.Thetrainerjustgivesthemanitemofclothingfromthelostpersonandthedogcansimplyfollowitsnosetofindtheperson.
Inthefiveyearsbetween2003and2008theSpringfieldSARTeamrespondedto122callsforhelp.Ofthese122calls,SARdogswereabletohelpalmost40percentoftime.Hereareafewofourmoreunusualsuccessstories:

ElementaryschoolteacherCarolynRubinhasbeenatrainerwiththeSpringfieldSARTeamforfouryears.ShewasoutforherusualrunonesunnySundaymorninginthespringof2002.HerownSARdog,Lucy,waswithher.AsRubinfollowedajoggingpathintoawoodedarea,shesuddenlyrealizedthatashadowyshapeaheadofherwasalargeblackbear-anditwascomingdirectlytowardsher!
Luckily,Lucyimmediatelystartedbarkingandbitingthebear’sbacklegsandeventuallyscaredtheanimalaway.
TheRightPlaceattheRightTime
InFebruary2004,DavidRoycroft,alocaldentist,wasskiingaloneinCanyonPark.SuddenlyRoycroftheardaloudnoise.Helookedupthehillandsawatree-meterwallofsnowheadingstraightforhim.Amomentlaterhewasunderit.Ifapersonremainsundersnowfor30minutes,heorshehasonlya50percentchanceofsurvival.Luckily,SpringfieldSARmemberJeannieNealwasskiingnearbywithherdog,Rusty.RustywasabletolocateRoycroftbyhisscentanddighimoutwithintenminutes.ThiswasafirsthumandirectfindforRustyandthedogseemedashappyaboutitasRoycroft!

TheCrocodile
Crocodileareamongtheoldestspeciesofanimalsonthefaceofearth.Atonetimetheysharedthesameenvironmentasthedinosaurs,howeverthedinosaursdisappearedabout65millionyearsago.Today,crocodilepopulationsaregrowinginmanyplacesandseveraltypesofcrocodilearenolongerendangered.Therearecurrently23differentspeciesfromthecrocodilefamilyin90countriesandislandsaroundtheworld.
Whyhasthecrocodilesurvivedforsolong?
Thecrocodileisatruesurvivor.Firstly,unlikethedinosaur,thecrocodilehasbeenabletochangephysically,oradapt,astheearth’sclimatehaschangedoverthepast200millionyears.Secondly,crocodilesareunusuallygoodatgettingoverdiseasesandinjuresofmanykinds.Illnessesthataffectotheranimalsinthesameenvironmentdonotseemtoaffectthecrocodiles.Acroccanalsobeseriouslyinjured,perhapslosingalegortailinafight,andstillsurviveformanyyears.Athirdreasonthatcrocodilehavesurvivedforsolongisthattheycaneatalmostanything-plantaoranimal.Iftheenvironmentchangesortheyareforcedtomovetoanewarea,theycaneatwhateverisavailable.Theyarealsoabletogoforverylongperiodsoftime-uptoayear-withouteating.Finally,crocodilesproducealotofyoung.Amothercrocusuallylaysasmanyas30eggsatatime,anditisnotunusualfor80to90percentofthemtohatch.

Myfavoritesayingis,“IhearandIforget.IseeandIremember.IdoandIunderstand.”It’snotclearwhetherConfuciussaidthisoroneofthisfollowers,butIagreecompletelywiththestatement.Forexample,I’mlearningGermanandittakeshardworktolearnnewvocabularywords.Hearingthemandreadingthemisagoodstart,butusingtheminmyownspeechandwritingiswhatreallyhelpsmetolearn.

“Togotoofarisasbadastofallshort.”Itmeansthattodotoomuchofsomethingisequallyasbadasnotdoingenough.It’spossibletonottryhardenoughanditisalsopossibletotrytoohard.Forexample,IwantedtoloseafewkilosforabigpartysoIdidn’teatenoughandexercisedallthetime.Intheend,Igotreallysickandtiredfromeatingpoorlyandcouldn’tevengototheparty!

).Thedirtisthenpouredontoascreenframe.Next,waterisrunoverthescreentowashawaythedirtwhilekeepinganyhiddengemsonthescreen.Therearemanythingstolookforwhilemining,butthemainthingtowatchforiscolor.Asparkleofredmaybearuby.Abrightbluestonemaybeasapphire.Agood-sizedstoneofanytypeisavaluablefind!

Abirdcountisanannualeventinwhichpeoplecountthenumberofbirdsintheirneighborhood.Localbird-watchersmakelistsofallthedifferenttypesofbirdstheysee,andhowmanyofeachtypetheysee.Birdcountstypicallylastforfourdays.Duringthisperiod,groupsofbird-watchersbringtheirbinocularsandjointheirfriendstoexplorethestreets,parks,fields,andwoodsneartheirhomes.
