Coralreefsareanimportantpartoftheocean'secosystem.Theyareasourceoffood,andactasprotectionforyoungfish.Butinthepastthreedecadestheyhavebeenunder__threataroundtheworldmainlyfromincreasedstorms,agrowingnumberofcrownofthornsstarfishandcoralbleaching(退色).
Stormdamagecausednearlyhalfofthecorallosses.Inthepastsevenyears,thereefhasbeenaffectedbysixmajorstorms,eachleavingatrail(痕迹)ofdestruction.
Thecrownofthornsstarfishisalsocausingproblems.Scientistsbelievethatrunoffs(地表径流)containingalargeamountoffertilizershavecausedthepopulationboostofthiscoraleatinganimal.Outbreaksofcrownofthornsstarfishusuallystarttwoorthreeyearsaftermajorfloodsinnorthernrivers.
Coralbleachingaccountsforabout10percentofcoraldamage.Itisusuallyduetooceanacidification(酸化)andrisingtemperaturesbecauseseawaterabsorbsmorecarbondioxidefromtheair.Thisdisruptsthecorals'abilitytogrowandbuildstructures.
Thegoodnewsisthatcoralscanrecoverifgiventhechance.Butthisisslow.Andthefutureoftheocean'scoralislargelyinhumanhands.
