JustfortodayIwilltrytolivethroughthisdayonlyandnottacklemywholelifeproblematonce.IcandosomethingfortwelvehoursthatwouldappallmeifIhadtokeepitupforalifetime.
JustfortodayIwillbehappy.ThisassumestobetruewhatAbrahamLincolnsaid,that“Mostfolksareashappyastheymakeuptheirmindstobe.”
JustfortodayIwilladjustmyselftowhatis,andnottrytoadjusteverythingtomyowndesires.Iwilltakemy“luck”asitcomes.JustfortodayIwilltrytostrengthenmymind.Iwillstudy.Iwilllearnsomethinguseful.Iwillnotbeamentalloafer.Iwillreadsomethingthatrequireseffort,thoughtandconcentration.
JustfortodayIwillexercisemysoulinthreeways.Iwilldosomebodyagoodturnandnotgetfoundout:
Ifanybodyknowsofit,itwillnotcount.IwilldoatleasttwothingsIdon'twanttodo—justforexercise.Iwillnotshowanyonethatmyfeelingsarehurt:

3.TheFirstSnow

Thefirstsnowcame.Howbeautifulitwas,fallingsosilentlyalldaylong,allnightlong,onthemountains,onthemeadows,ontheroofsoftheliving,onthegravesofthedead!
Allwhitesavetheriver,thatmarkeditscoursebyawindingblacklineacrossthelandscape;andtheleaflesstrees,thatagainsttheleadenskynowrevealedmorefullythewonderfulbeautyandintricaciesoftheirbranches.
Whatsilence,too,camewiththesnow,andwhatseclusion!
Everysoundwasmuffled,everynoisechangedtosomethingsoftandmusical.
Nomoretrampinghoofs,nomorerattlingwheels!
Onlythechimingofsleigh-bells,beatingasswiftandmerrilyastheheartsofchildren.
4.OurHabitsAreLessonsinDisguise
Wealwayshavesomethingtobethankfulfor.Theairwebreatheisagoodstart.Ourcapacitytothinkandrelatetoone another isagifttoappreciate.Eventhehabitswehave,goodorbad,existforpositivereasons.Wearemeanttolearnfromthem.Without contrast, wehavenocontext.Andwithoutcontext,content doesn’t reallymatter.Whatisupifwedonotunderstanddown?
Whatisgoodifwedonotknowbad?
Ourhabitsarelessonsindisguise. Theychallengeustogrow,tobecomemoreaware,tostopandsmelltheroses.
Whenwegivethanksandappreciate,we immediately transcendall negative energyand emotion holdingusback.Trythis:
thenexttimeyougetabillinthemail,say“thankyou”.Feelgoodthatyouhaveamailbox,andanaddress.Donotfearthebill,resistthebill,getupsetaboutthebillorworryaboutthebill.Simplyappreciateit.Nowdothesamethingthenexttimeyouaredelayedonaflight,rejectedforajobopening,orcriticizedbysomeonewho doesn't knowanybetter.RecognizethattheworldisfullofstimuliandWEhavethe power tochoosehowwewillrespond.
Paycloseattentiontoyourrepeatedtendenciesand habits andremindyourselftopausebeforehittingthereplay(autopilot)button.Donotfanthefiresofdiscontentwithhostilityandresistance.
5.BeHappy

WhenIfirstreadthislinebyEngland’sPoetLaureate,itstartledme.WhatdidMasefieldmean?
Withoutthinkingaboutitmuch,Ihadalwaysassumedthattheoppositewastrue.Buthissoberassurancewasarresting.Icouldnotforgetit.
Finally,Iseemedtograsphismeaningandrealizedthatherewasaprofoundobservation.Thewisdomthathappinessmakespossibleliesinclearperception,notfoggedbyanxietynordimmedbydespairandboredom,andwithouttheblindspotscausedbyfear.
Activehappiness——notmeresatisfactionorcontentment---oftencomessuddenly,likeanAprilshowerortheunfoldingofabud.Thenyoudiscoverwhatkindofwisdomhasaccompaniedit.Thegrassisgreener;birds’songsaresweeter;theshortcomingsofyourfriendsaremoreunderstandableandmoreforgivable.Happinessislikeapairofeyeglassescorrectingyourspiritualvision.
Noraretheinsightsofhappinesslimitedtowhatisneararoundyou.Unhappy,withyourthoughtsturnedinuponyouremotionalwoes,yourvisioniscutshortasthoughbyawall.Happy,thewallcrumbles.
Thelongvistaistherefortheseeing.Thegroundatyourfeet,theworldaroundyou——people,thoughts,emotionsandpressures——arenowfittedintothelargerscene.Everythingassumesafairerproportion,andhereisthebeginningofwisdom.
6.TheHappyDoor
Happinessislikeapebbledroppedintoapooltosetinmotionanever-wideningcircleofripples.AsStevensonhassaid,beinghappyisaduty.
Thereisnoexactdefinitionofthewordhappiness.Happypeoplearehappyforallsortsofreasons.Thekeyisnotwealthorphysicalwell-being,sincewefindbeggars,invalidsandso-calledfailures,whoareextremelyhappy.
Beinghappyisasortofunexpecteddividend.Butstayinghappyisanaccomplishment,atriumphofsoulandcharacter.Itisnotselfishtostriveforit.Itis,indeed,adutytoourselvesandothers.
Beingunhappyislikeaninfectiousdisease.Itcausespeopletoshrinkawayfromthesufferer.Hesoonfindshimselfalone,miserableandembittered.Thereis,however,acuresosimpleastoseem,atfirstglance,ridiculous;ifyoudon’tfeelhappy,pretendtobe!
Itworks.Beforelongyouwillfindthatinsteadofrepellingpeople,youattractthem.Youdiscoverhowdeeplyrewardingitistobethecenterofwiderandwidercirclesofgoodwill.
Thenthemake-believebecomesareality.Youpossessthesecretofpeaceofmind,andcanforgetyourselfinbeingofservicetoothers.
Beinghappy,onceitisrealizedasadutyandestablishedasahabit,opensdoorsintounimaginablegardensthrongedwithgratefulfriends.
