Pre-transistorequipmentisnowviewedascrudeandclumsy,yetitmanagestoproducesuchfar-reachingtechniquesasradar.Computersmadebeforethetransistorwereelementary,enormousandslowbymodernstandards.Therevolutionreacheditspeakinthelate1950s,withthesuccessfulbreakthroughintotheworldofmicro-electronics.Thisisanewseriesofmicro-miniatureelectronicdevicesinthesolidstate,offeringalmostlimitlessscopeindesigningandproducingcompletecircuitsonatinychipofsilicon,notmuchbiggerthanapin-head.However,theconventionaltechnologyoftheday----basedonthetransistor----hadbeendevelopedtoquiteasophisticatedlevel.Thusitwaspossibletofitessentialelectronicstoearthsatellitesandspaceprobes,totakethecomputertoamoreadvancedstageandtostartanentirelynewindustry.Todaymicro-electronicsstandsasthefoundationoftheindustry’stotalfuture,offeringvastpotentialities.Thesceneinthenextcenturycannotbepreciselypredicted,butclearlytheeffortsofthisindustrywillbeaimedatmakinglifeeasier.Advancedelectroniccontroltechniqueswilltakethedrudgeryoutofmostwork;thefactoryandofficewilllargelybethearenaofautomationandevenhouseworkwillbemoreaquestionofefficientprogramming,ratherthanoftediouschores.
