Introduction
ThestructuralresponseofthepumpassemblyshowninFigureW3–1willbedetermined.Theassemblycomponentsincludethepumphousing(importedasanorphanmesh),agasket,acover,andeightbolts(allimportedasCADgeometry).Theanalysisinvolvesapplicationofpre-tensioningloadsintheboltsfollowedbyinternalpressure.

Inthisworkshop,youwillcreatethepartsofthemodel.UsethePartmoduleofABAQUS/CAEtoimportthemeshofapumphousing.Somemodificationsofitsgeometricfeaturesfollow.Theothercomponentsofthepumpassembly(cover,gasket,andbolts)willbeimportedasCADgeometry.Allofthepartswillbehalvedtotakeadvantageofsymmetry.
Note:
Thepartscreatedinthisworkshopwillbeusedinsubsequentworkshopstobuildthecompletemodelandtoperformtheanalysis.Itisimportantthatyouusethedimensionsstatedandnotdeviatefromtheworkshopinstructions;otherwise,youmayfinditdifficulttocompletethesubsequentworkshops.
Orphanmeshimport
Followthestepsbelowtoimportthemeshofthepumphousingmodel.
1.StartanewsessionofABAQUS/CAEfromworkshops/pumpdirectory.
ABAQUS/CAEautomaticallyloadsthePartmodule.
2.Fromthemainmenubar,selectFileImportModel.Fromthelistofavailablemodels,selectpump_ribs.inp.
3.ABAQUS/CAEtakesafewsecondstoimportthemodel.Oncethemodelisimported,youwillbeintheAssemblymodule.SwitchbacktothePartmodule.Noticethatanewmodel(namedpump_ribs)whichcontainstheimportedpart(namedPUMP–1)hasbeencreated.ThemodelappearsasshowninFigureW3–2.

Editingnodalcoordinates
Yourfirsttaskwillbetochangetheinnerdiameteroftheholethatgoesthroughthetopofthepump.Thecoordinatesofthenodesalongtheinnerdiameterneedtobechanged.Sincethesenodeslieonacircularsurface,itwillbeadvantageoustodefineacylindricalcoordinatesystemandsimplychangetheradialcoordinateofthenodes.Followthestepsbelowtoachievethistask.
4.Fromthemainmenubar,selectViewViewsToolbox.IntheViewsdialogbox,selectthe1–2view.TurnofftheperspectiveviewbyclickingtheTurnPerspectiveOfftool(
),andzoomintothecomponentsothattheholeisclearlyvisible(seeFigureW3–3).

5.Fromthemainmenubar,selectToolsDatum.TheCreateDatumdialogboxappears(seeFigureW3–4).SelectCSYSasthedatumtype.Selectthe3pointsmethod,andclickOK.Whenpromptedforthetypeofcoordinatesystem,chooseCylindrical.Placethecoordinatesystemattheorigin(0.0,0.0,0.0)andclickCreateDatum.
Acylindricaldatumcoordinatesystemiscreated.Theoriginofthecoordinatesystemcoincideswiththepositionofthecenterofthehole.

6.Youwillnowmodifytheinnerdiameterofthehole.Fromthemainmenubar,selectToolsEditMesh.IntheEditMeshdialogbox,selectNodeasthecategoryandEditasthemethod,asshowninFigureW3–5.ClickOKtoclosethedialogboxandproceed.

7.Youwillbepromptedtoselectthenodestobemodified.BeginbysettingtheselectionfiltersasshowninFigureW3–6byclickingtheShow/HideSelectionOptionstool,
inthepromptarea.

8.Thenodescanbeselectedinoneoftwoways:
∙Tryselectingthenodesindividually(thedefaultselectiontechnique)usingaCircularDragShape.Thecenterofthedragshapeshouldbethecenterofthecylindricalcoordinatesystemdefinedearlier(seestep2).Selectaperimeterpointforthedragshapesuchthatyouincludeallthenodesontheinsidesurfaceofthehole.Theselectednodeswillbehighlightedinredaftertheselection,asshowninFigureW3–7.Youmaywishtorotateyourmodeltocheckwhetherallthenodeshavebeenselectedproperly.
∙Youmayalsoselectthenodesusingthefaceanglemethod(i.e.,byspecifyingthemaximumdeviationintheanglebetweenadjacentelementfaces).Thistechniqueisgenerallymoreefficientthanselectingthenodesindividually:
allnodesthatpertaintotheelementfacesthatsatisfythefaceanglecriterionareautomaticallyselected.Inthepromptarea,choosebyfaceangleasthemethodbywhichthenodeswillbeselected.Then,clickonanyelementfacelocatedontheinnersurfaceofthehole.Thenodesontheinnersurfacearehighlightedinredaftertheselection.Asbefore,rotateyourmodeltomakesureallthenodeshavebeenselectedproperly.
Onceyouaresatisfiedwiththeselection(usingeithermethod),clickDoneinthepromptarea.

9.TheEditNodesdialogboxappears,asshowninFigureW3–8.Thisdialogboxwillbeusedtochangethediameterofthehole.ClickSelectintheupperrightcornerofthedialogbox,andchoosethecylindricalcoordinatesystemdefinedinstep2byclickingonitintheviewportwhenpromptedtochoosealocalcoordinatesystem.
10.UsingtheCoordinatesspecificationmethod,changethe1–coordinate(i.e.,theradialcoordinate)byselectingSpecifyfromthepulldownlistandentering0.65.ClickOKtoclosethedialogboxandthenDoneinthepromptareatocompletetheoperation.

Deletingelements
Youwillnowremovetheribsonthepumphousingandthenyouwillremovehalfofthepart.Beginbyremovingsomeoftheelementsintheriblocatednearthefrontofthehousing,asshowninFigureW3–9.Usethe1–3viewfromtheViewsToolbox,androtatethepumptoviewoneofthefrontribs,asshowninFigureW3–9.

11.Fromthemainmenubar,selectToolsEditMesh.IntheEditMeshdialogbox,selectElementasthecategoryandDeleteasthemethod.ClickOK.
12.Whenpromptedtoselecttheelementstobedeleted,usetheShow/HideSelectionOptionstooltochangethedragshapetoaPolygon.Selectsomeoftheelementslocatednearthe90bendoftherib,asshowninFigureW3–9.
13.Inthepromptarea,toggleonDeleteassociatedunreferencednodes.
14.Zoomoutandrotatetheviewtoconfirmthatonlyelementspertainingtotheribshavebeenselected.Ifanyotherelementsarehighlighted,deselectthemusing[Control]+Click.Whenyouaresatisfiedwiththeselection,clickDonetodeletetheelementsandtheirassociatednodes.
15.Theremainingribsonthepumphousingcanberemovedbycarefullyselectingtheminasimilarfashion.Thiscanbeatediousandtime-consumingprocessforlarge,complicatedmodels.Tofacilitatesuchtasks,elementsmayalsobedeletedusingsets.

B.InthepromptareatoggleonDeleteassociatedunreferencednodes.
C.Inthepromptarea,clickSetstoopentheRegionSelectiondialogbox.Inthisdialogbox,selectthesetRIBSandtoggleonHighlightselectionsinviewporttohighlighttheelementsbelongingtothisset.
D.ClickContinuetodeletetheremainingribelements.
E.ClickCanceltoclosethedialogbox.
Youwillnowhalvethepumphousing.Usethe1–2viewfromtheViewsToolboxtofacilitateelementselection.
16.Fromthemainmenubar,selectToolsEditMesh.IntheEditMeshdialogbox,clickOKtocontinuedeletingelements.
17.Inthepromptarea,toggleonDeleteassociatedunreferencednodes.
Tip:
IftheRegionSelectiondialogboxappears,clickSelectinViewportontherightsideofthepromptareasoyoucanselectelementsintheviewport.
18.Selecttheupperhalfofthepumphousingfordeletion,asshowninW3–10.Whenyouaresatisfiedwiththeselection,clickDonetodeletetheelementsandtheirassociatednodes.

19.Savethemodeldatabase.NamethemodeldatabasefilePumpAssy.cae.

20.Fromthemainmenubar,selectFileImportParttoopentheImportPartdialogbox.
21.Inthisdialogbox,setthefiletypetoACISSAT.Fromthelistofavailablefiles,selectcover.sat.ClickOKinthedialogboxtoproceed.
22.IntheCreatePartfromAcisFiledialogbox,selecttheName-Repairtabandtoggleonalltheavailablerepairoptions.ClickOKtoclosethedialogboxandcontinue.

23.Afterthepartisimported,usetheGeometrydiagnosticspartquerytools(ToolsQuery)tocheckforanyinvalidorimpreciseentities.
