Thecross-culturalgeneralizabilityofvocationalintereststructureshasreceivedsignificantattentioninrecentyears.Thisarticleaddstothisresearchinfourrespects.First,datafromacontextthathasnotpreviouslybeeninvestigated(Germany)wasanalyzed.Second,studentsatdifferentstagesoftheireducationalcareerwereexamined.Third,theintereststructureinmaleandfemaleswascompared.Fourth,twomethods—therandomizationtestofhypothesizedorderrelations(RTOR)andconfirmatoryfactoranalysis(CFA)—wereappliedtothreecompetingstructuralconceptions:
Holland’scircularrepresentation,Gati’shierarchicalmodel,andRoundsandTracey’salternativehierarchicalmodel.RTORsupportedallthreerepresentations,whereasCFAsupportedonlyHolland’smodel.CFAsindicatedthattheintereststructureisreasonablyinvariantbetweenhighschoolanduniversitystudents,butthattheconfigurationsforhighschoolfemalesandmalesdiffer.Substantiveandmethodologicalimplicationsarediscussed.
