Congratulationstoyou,toyourfamily,toyourfriendsthatareattendingtodaysceremony.Youmadeit.Itsaprivilege,arareprivilegeofalifetimetobewithyoutoday.AndIthinkthankyouenoughformakingmeanhonoraryColonial.
BeforeIbegintoday,theyaskedmetomakeastandardannouncement.Youveheardthisbefore.Aboutsilencingyourphones.ThoseofyouwithaniPhone,justplaceitinsilentmode.IfyoudonthaveaniPhone,pleasepassittothecenteraisle.Applehasaworldclassrecyclingprogram.
Youknow,thisisreallyanamazingplace.Andforalotofyou,ImsurethatbeinghereinWashington,theverycenterofourdemocracy,wasabigdrawwhenyouwerechoosingwhichschooltogoto.Thisplacehasapowerfulpull.ItwasherethatDr.MartinLutherKingchallengedAmericanstomakerealthepromisesofdemocracy,tomakejusticearealityforallofGodschildren.
AnditwasherethatPresidentRonaldReagancalledonustobelieveinourselvesandtobelieveinourcapacitytoperformgreatdeeds.Idliketostartthismorningbytellingyouaboutmyfirstvisithere.Inthesummerof1977yes,ImalittleoldIwas16yearsoldandlivinginRobertsdale,thesmalltowninsouthernAlabamathatIgrewupin.AttheendofmyjunioryearofhighschoolIdwonanessaycontestsponsoredbytheNationalRuralElectricAssociation.Icantrememberwhattheessaywasabout,whatIdorememberveryclearlyiswritingitbyhand,draftafterdraftafterdraft.Typewriterswereveryexpensiveandmyfamilycouldnotaffordone.
IwasoneoftwokidsfromBaldwinCountythatwaschosentogotoWashingtonalongwithhundredsofotherkidsacrossthecountry.Beforeweleft,theAlabamadelegationtookatriptoourstatecapitolinMontgomeryforameetingwiththegovernor.ThegovernorsnamewasGeorgeC.Wallace.ThesameGeorgeWallacewhoin1963stoodintheschoolhousedoorattheUniversityofAlabamatoblockAfricanAmericansfromenrolling.Wallaceembracedtheevilsofsegregation.Hepittedwhitesagainstblacks,theSouthagainsttheNorth,theworkingclassagainstthesocalledelites.Meetingmygovernorwasnotanhonorforme.
MyheroesinlifewereDr.MartinLutherKing,andRobertF.Kennedy,whohadfoughtagainsttheverythingsthatWallacestoodfor.Keepinmind,thatIgrewup,or,whenIgrewup,IgrewupinaplacewhereKingandKennedywerenotexactlyheldinhighesteem.WhenIwasakid,theSouthwasstillcomingtogripswithitshistory.MytextbooksevensaidtheCivilWarwasaboutstatesrights.Theybarelymentionedslavery.
SoIhadtofigureoutformyselfwhatwasrightandtrue.Itwasasearch.Itwasaprocess.ItdrewonthemoralsensethatIdlearnedfrommyparents,andinchurch,andinmyownheart,andledmeonmyownjourneyofdiscovery.Ifoundbooksinthepubliclibrarythattheyprobablydidntknowtheyhad.TheyallpointedtothefactthatWallacewaswrong.Thatinjusticeslikesegregationhadnoplaceinourworld.Thatequalityisaright.
AsIsaid,Iwasonly16whenImetGovernorWallace,soIshookhishandaswewereexpectedtodo.Butshakinghishandfeltlikeabetrayalofmyownbeliefs.Itfeltwrong.LikeIwassellingapieceofmysoul.

FromMontgomeryweflewtoWashington.ItwasthefirsttimeIhadeverbeenonanairplane.InfactitwasthefirsttimethatItraveledoutoftheSouth.OnJune15,1977,Iwasoneof900highschoolersgreetedbythenewpresident,PresidentJimmyCarter,onthesouthlawnoftheWhiteHouse,rightthereontheothersideoftheellipse.Iwasoneoftheluckyones,whogottoshakehishand.CartersawBaldwinCountyonmynametagthatdayandstoppedtospeakwithme.HewantedtoknowhowpeopleweredoingaftertherashofstormsthatstruckAlabamathatyear.Carterwaskindandcompassionate;heheldthemostpowerfuljobintheworldbuthehadnotsacrificedanyofhishumanity.Ifeltproudthathewaspresident.AndIfeltproudthathewasfromtheSouth.Inthespaceofaweek,Ihadcomefacetofacewithtwomenwhoguaranteedthemselvesaplaceinhistory.Theycamefromthesameregion.Theywerefromthesamepoliticalparty.Theywerebothgovernorsofadjoiningstates.Buttheylookedattheworldinverydifferentways.Itwascleartome,thatonewasright,andonewaswrong.Wallacehadbuilthispoliticalcareerbyexploitingdivisionsbetweenus.Cartersmessageontheotherhand,wasthatweareallboundtogether,everyoneofus.Eachhadmadeajourneythatledthemtothevaluesthattheylivedby,butitwasntjustabouttheirexperiencesortheircircumstances,ithadtocomefromwithin.
Myownjourneyinlifewasjustbeginning.Ihadntevenappliedforcollegeyetatthatpoint.Foryougraduates,theprocessofdiscoveringyourself,ofinventingyourself,ofreinventingyourselfisabouttobegininearnest.Itsaboutfindingyourvaluesandcommittingtolivebythem.YouhavetofindyourNorthStar.Andthatmeanschoices.Someareeasy.Somearehard.Andsomewillmakeyouquestioneverything.TwentyyearsaftermyvisittoWashington,Imetsomeonewhomademequestioneverything.Whoupendedallofmyassumptionsintheverybestway.ThatwasSteveJobs.
Stevehadbuiltasuccessfulcompany.Hehadbeensentawayandhereturnedtofinditinruins.Hedidntknowitatthetime,buthewasabouttodedicatetherestofhislifetorescuingit,andleadingittoheightsgreaterthananyonecouldeverimagine.Anyone,thatis,exceptforSteve.Mostpeoplehaveforgotten,butin1997andearly1998,Applehadbeenadriftforyears.Rudderless.ButStevethoughtApplecouldbegreatagain.AndhewantedtoknowifIdliketohelp.
HisvisionforApplewasacompanythatturnedpowerfultechnologyintotoolsthatwereeasytouse,toolsthatwouldhelppeoplerealizetheirdreams.Andchangetheworldforthebetter.IhadstudiedtobeanengineerandearnedanM.B.A.Iwastrainedtobepragmatic,aproblemsolver.NowIfoundmyselfsittingbeforeandlisteningtothisveryanimated40somethingguywithvisionsofchangingtheworld.ItwasnotwhatIhadexpected.Yousee,whenitcametomycareer,in1998,Iwasalsoadrift.Rudderless.
IknewwhoIwasinmypersonallife,andIkeptmyeyeonmyNorthStar,myresponsibilitytodogoodforsomeoneelse,otherthanmyself.Butatwork,wellIalwaysfiguredthatworkwaswork.Valueshadtheirplaceand,yes,therewerethingsthatIwantedtochangeabouttheworld,butIthoughtIhadtodothatonmyowntime.Notintheoffice.Stevedidntseeitthatway.Hewasanidealist.AndinthatwayheremindedmeofhowIfeltasateenager.Inthatfirstmeetingheconvincedmeifweworkedhardandmadegreatproducts,wetoocouldhelpchangetheworld.Andtomysurprise,Iwashooked.Itookthejobandchangedmylife.Itsbeen17yearsandIhaveneveroncelookedback.
AtApplewebelievetheworkshouldbemorethanjustaboutimprovingyourownself.Itsaboutimprovingthelivesofothersaswell.Ourproductsdoamazingthings.AndjustasSteveenvisioned,theyempowerpeopleallovertheworld.Peoplewhoareblind,andneedinformationreadtothembecausetheycantseethescreen.Peopleforwhomtechnologyisalifelinebecausetheyareisolatedbydistanceordisability.Peoplewhowitnessinjusticeandwanttoexposeit,andnowtheycanbecausetheyhaveacameraintheirpocketallthetime.
Ourcommitmentgoesbeyondtheproductsthemselvestohowtheyremade.Toourimpactontheenvironment.Totheroleweplayindemandingandpromotingequality.Andinimprovingeducation.Webelievethatacompanythathasvaluesandactsonthemcanreallychangetheworld.Andanindividualcantoo.Thatcanbeyou.Thatmustbeyou.Graduates,yourvaluesmatter.TheyareyourNorthStar.Andworktakesonnewmeaningwhenyoufeelyouarepointedintherightdirection.Otherwise,itsjustajob,andlifeistooshortforthat.Weneedthebestandbrightestofyourgenerationtoleadingovernmentandinbusiness.Inthescienceandinthearts.Injournalismandinacademia.Thereishonorinallofthesepursuits.Andthereisopportunitytodoworkthatisinfusedwithmoralpurpose.Youdonthavetochoosebetweendoinggoodanddoingwell.Itsafalsechoice,todaymorethanever.
Yourchallengeistofindworkthatpaystherent,putsfoodonthetable,andletsyoudowhatisrightandgoodandjust.
SofindyourNorthStar.Letitguideyouinlife,andwork,andinyourlifeswork.Now,Isuspectsomeofyouarentbuyingthis.Iwonttakeitpersonally.Itsnosurprisethatpeopleareskeptical,especiallyhereinWashington.Wherethesedaysyouvegotplentyofreasontobe.Andahealthyamountofskepticismisfine.Thoughtooofteninthistown,itturnstocynicism.Totheideathatnomatterwhostalkingorwhattheyresaying,thattheirmotivesarequestionable,theircharacterissuspect,andifyousearchhardenough,youcanprovethattheyarelying.Maybethatsjusttheworldwelivein.Butgraduates,thisisyourworldtochange.
