ComparingthetimeIreallyspentandthetimeIexpectedtospend,thereisalargedifferenceinstudyactivitiesandlivingactivities,andalittledifferenceinpart-timeand/orvolunteerwork.ReflectingbacktothemaingoalmestudyingabroadinUK,obviously,Iamnotdoingwellintimemanagementtoachievemygoalshere.
Thereisnoagreementonhowtodefinetimemanagementinpaststudies,althoughmanyexpertsreferredtoLakein(1973),whosuggestedthattimemanagementinvolvestheprocessofdeterminingneeds,settinggoalstoachievetheseneeds,prioritizingandplanningtasksrequiredtoachievethesegoals.
“Thus,timemanagementhasbeenreferredtoasthetechniquesformanagingtime(Davis,2000;Macanetal,1990);atechniqueforeffectivetimeuse,especiallyhavingenoughtimetoaccomplishthemanytasksrequired(Orpen,1994;SlavenandTotterdell,1993);planningandallocatingtime(Francis-SmytheandRobertson1999a);thedegreetowhichindividualsperceivetheiruseoftimetobestructuredandpurposive(StrongmanandBurt,2000;Sabelies,2001);awayofgettinginsightintotimeuse(Koolhaasetal,1992);atechniquetoincreasethetimeavailabletopursueactivities(Kingetal,1986);practicesintendedtomaximizeintellectualproductivity(BrittonandTesser,1991);anapplicationofself-regulationprocessesinthetemporaldomain(Griffiths,2003);copingbehaviorinat-riskpopulations(Kingetal,1986);self-regulationstrategiesaimedatdiscussingplans,andtheirefficiency(EilamandAharon,2003);theuseofproceduresthataredesignedtohelptheindividualtoachievehis/herdesiredgoals(HallandHursch,1982);waystoassesstherelativeimportanceofactivitiesthroughthedevelopmentofaprioritizationplan(Kaufman-ScarboroughandLindquist,1999);clustersofbehaviorthataredeemedtofacilitateproductivityandalleviatestress(LayandSchouwenburg,1993).”(BrigitteandWendelien,2005)
Accordingtothedefinitionofthetimemanagement,wecanfigureoutthattheuseoftimerelatestomanyaspectslikepersonalneeds,desireandgoals,whilstitwouldinfluenceaspectssuchasperformance,communicationandevenstress.Themoreeffectivethetimewemanage,thegreaterbenefitwecanobtain.
ThoseshortagesmentionedaboveillustratessomeproblemsthatImaynotrealizeuntiltheresultscameout.Andwithreflectingtomypersonality,thelackoflifegoalmaybethepotentialfactorswhichleadtothoseweaknesses.AcriticalEIreflectionidentifiesthelackoflifegoalastheprinciplecomponentforsomeofthoselowscores,duetothecautionareasofintentionality,personalpowerandoptimalperformance.
