Itwasthisthoughtthatledhimtoleavehismoney一ahugeamountofit—forthefoundingofthefamousNobelPrizes.Hisaimwasforhismoneytobeusedtosupporttheongoingquest(追求)forexcellenceinthesciencesandliterature,andtheidealofpeace.Thousandsofmenandwomenhavebeenhonoredsincethefirstawardsweregivenoutin1901.Theawardslettheworldknowaboutthedevelopmentsthatmayhaveahugeeffectonourlives.
However,theprizesarecontroversialsometimes.Thereisoftenprotest(抗议)attheawardofthepeaceprizewhennoteveryonethinksthattheaward-winnersdeservetheaward.Eventheawardforliteraturehassometimesbeencriticizedbecausetheawardcommitteeoftenneglectsimportantwriters.ThehighlyinfluentialnovelistsJamesJoyceandMarcelProust,forexample,wereneverhonoredbytheSwedishAcademy.
