Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.

Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,ofstartingmiddleorhighschool,it'syoufirstdayinanewschool.

Soit'sunderstandableifyou'realittlenervous.

Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnowwithjustonemoreyeartogo.

Andnomatterwhatgradeyouarein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucould'vestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.

Iknowthatfeeling.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears.Andmymother,shedidn'thavethemoneytosendmewhereallAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday.

Butbecauseshehadtogotoworktheonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:

30inthemorning.

NowasyoumightimagineIwasn'ttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.

AndalotoftimesI'dfallasleeprightthereinthekitchentable.ButwheneverI'dcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshe'dsay"Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster".

SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool.ButI'mheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.I'mherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhat'sexpectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.

I'vegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndI'vetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.I'vetalkedaboutteacher'sresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushingyoutolearn.

I'vetalkedaboutyourparents'responsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrackandyougetyourhomeworkdoneanddon'tspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththeXbox.

I'vetalkedalotaboutyourgovernment'sresponsibilityforsettinghighstandardsandsupportingteachersandprinciplesandturningaroundschoolsthataren'tworkingwherestudentsaren'tgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.

Butattheendofthedaywecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworldandnoneofitwillmakeadifferenceandnoneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.

That'swhatIwanttofocusontoday,theresponsibilityeachofyouhasfroyoureducation.

Iwantstartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.

Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyou'regoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.That'stheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.

Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter,maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper,butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatEnglishclasspaperthat'sassignedtoyou.Maybeyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor,maybegoodenoughtocomeupwiththenextiphoneorthenewmedicineorvaccine,butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclass.MaybeyoucouldbeamayororasenatororaSupremeCourtjustice,butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.

Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyou'llneedaneducationtodoit.

Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?

Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?

Youaregoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecareers.Youcannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropinagoodjob.You'vegottotrainforitandworkforitandlearnforit.

Andthisisn'tjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.ThefutureofAmericadependsonyou.Whatyou'relearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.

You'llneedtheknowledgeandproblemsolvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecancerandAIDSandtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourenvironments.Youneedtheinsightsandcritical-thinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudiestofightpovertyandhomelessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournationmorefairandmorefree.You'llneedthecreativityandingenuityyoudevelopinallyourclassestobuiltnewcompaniesthatwillcreatenewjobsandboostoureconomy.

Weneedeverysingleoneofyoutodevelopyourtalentsandyourskillsandyourintellectsoyoucanhelpusoldfolkssolveourmostdifficultproblems.

Ifyoudon'tdothat,ifyouquitonschool,you'renotjustquittingonyourself,you'requittingonyourcountry.

Iknowit'snotalwayseasytodowellinschool.

Iknowalotofyouhavechallengesinyourlivesrightnowthatcanmakeithardtofocusonyourschoolwork.

IgetitandIknowwhatit'slike.

MyfatherleftmyfamilywhenIwastwoyearsold,andIwasraisedbyasinglemomwhohadtoworkandwhostruggledattimestopaythebillsandwasn'talwaysabletogiveusthethingsthatotherkidshad.

ThereweretimeswhenImissedhavingafatherinmylife.ThereweretimeswhenIwaslonelyandIfeltlikeIdidn'tfitin.

SoIwasn'talwaysasfocusedasIshouldhavebeenonschoolandI'vedidsomethingsthatI'mnotproudofandIgotinmoretroublethatIshouldhave.Andmylifecouldhaveeasilytakenaturnfortheworse.

ButIwaslucky.IgotalotofsecondchancesandIhadtheopportunitytogotocollegeandlawschoolandfollowmydreams.

Mywife,thefirstlady,MichelleObama,shehasasimilarstory.Neitherofherparentshadgonetocollegeandtheydidn'thavealotofmoney.Buttheyworkedhardandsheworkedhardsothatshecouldgotothebestschoolsinthiscountry.

Someofyoumightnothavethoseadvantages.Maybeyoudon'thaveadultsinyourlifewhogiveyouthesupportthatyouneed.Maybesomeoneofyourfamilyhaslosttheirjobandthere'snotenoughmoneytogoaround.Maybeyouliveinaneighborhoodwhereyoudon'tfeelsafeorhavefriendswhoarepressuringyoutodothingsyouknowaren'tright.

Butattheendoftheday,thecircumstancesofyourlife,whatyoulooklike,whereyoucomefrom,howmuchmoneyyouhave,whatyou'vegotgoingonathome,noneofthatisanexcuseforneglectingyourhomeworkorhavingabadattitudeinschool.That'snoexcusefortalkingbacktoyourteacherorcuttingclass,ordroppingoutofschool.Thereisnoexcusefornottrying.

Whereyouarerightnowdoesn'thavetodeterminewhereyou'llendup.Noone'swrittenyourdestinyforyoubecausehereinAmerica,youwriteyourowndestiny.Youmakeyourownfuture.That'swhatyoungpeoplelikeyoudoingeveryday,allacrossAmerica.

YoungpeoplelikeJazminPeres,fromRoma,Texas.Jazmindidn'tspeakEnglishwhenshefirststartedschool.Neitherofherparentshadgonetocollege.Butsheworkedhard,earnedgoodgradesandgotascholarshiptoBrownUniversity,nowisingraduateschoolstudyingpublichealthonherwaytobecomingDr.JazminPerez.

I'mthinkingaboutAndoniSchultz.fromLosAltos,Californiawho'sfoughtbraincancersincehewasthree.He'shadtoendureallsortsoftreatmentsandsurgeriesoneofwhichaffectedhismemorysoittookhimmuchlonger-hundredsofextrahours-todohisschoolwork.Butheneverfellbehind.He'sheadedtocollegethisfall.

Andthere'sShantellSteve,frommyhometownofChicagoIllinois.Evenwhenbouncingfromfosterhometofosterhomeinthetoughestneighborhoodsinthecity,shemanagedtogetajobatalocalhealthcarecenter,startaprogramtokeepyoungpeopleoutofgangsandshe'sontracktograduatehighschoolwithhonorsandtotocollege.

AndJazmin,Andoni,andShantellaren'tanydifferentfromanyofyou.Theyfacechallengesintheirlivesjustlikeyoudo.Insomecasesthey'vegotitalotworseoffthanmanyofyou.Buttheyrefusedtogiveup.Theychosetotakeresponsibilityfortheirlives,fortheireducationandsetgoalsforthemselves.AndIexpectallofyoutodothesame.

That'swhytodayI'mcallingoneachofyoutosetyourowngoalsforyoureducationanddoeverythingyoucantomeetthem.Yourgoalcanbesomethingassimpleasdoingallyourhomework,payingattentioninclass,orspendingsometimeeachdayreadingabook.Maybeyou'lldecidetogetinvolvedinanextracurricularactivityorvolunteerinyourcommunity.Maybeyou'lldecidetostandupforkidswhoarebeingteasedorbulliedbecauseofwhotheyareorhowtheylook,becauseyoubelieve,likeIdo,thatallyoungpeopledeserveasafeenvironmenttostudyandlearn.Maybeyou'lldecidetotakebettercareofyourselfsoyoucouldbemorereadytolearn.Andalongthoselines,bytheway,Ihopeallofyouarewashingyourhandsalotandthatyoustayhomefromschoolwhenyoudon'tfeelwellsowecankeeppeoplefromgettingthefluthisfallandwinter.

Butwhateveryouresolvetodo,Iwantyoutocommittoit.Iwantyoutoreallyworkatit.
