Plato’sUtopia
IthasbeensaidthatallsubsequentphilosophyismerelyafootnotetoPlato,andthisiscertainlytrueofpoliticalphilosophy.Plato’srepublicsketchesoutthefundamentalsofpoliticaltheory.Theoriginsofsociety,itsuggests,areinpracticalself-interest.Butalthoughthepursuitofwealthmotivatesall,itmustnotmotivatetherulers-theGuardians.Platoseestwomainthreatstosociety,eitherexternal-requiringamilitaryresponse,orinternal-requiringapoliticalresponse.Internalthreatsareminimizedbyensuringtherulingclassaretheresolelyonmerit,andreceivenorewardsotherthansatisfactionfromperformingtheirdutyandachievingawell-orderedsociety.

everythingdependsonthis,andifthisispreserved,everythingispreservedandifthisisdestroyedeverythingisdestroyed’.

ItwaswhilstDemocritus[diˈmɔkritəs]wasdevisingatheoryofatomsinMesopotamia[ˌmɛsəpəˈtemiə]thatSocrates,inAthens,washoldingthephilosophicaldiscussionsthat,throughtheRepublic,andmanyotherwritingsofPlato,havecomenotmerelytoinfluencebuttodeterminemuchofwesternculture,educationandsociety.Socrates’positioninEuropeanthought,ithasbeensaid,islikethatofareligiousleader,who,althoughhehimselfwrotenothing,hashadthekindofinfluencenormallyreservedonlyformessiahs[məˈsaɪə],spreadthroughtheaccountsofhisfollowers,ofwhomPlatoisonlythemostimmediateanddirect.AndthestyleofPlato’spoliticalphilosophyisalsoreligiousintone,setoutintheformofdialoguesintheRepublic.Socratesisportrayedthereasthewiseone,extollingtheneedtocometoknowthe‘good’,ortobeprecise‘theFormoftheGood’.Thissomeseeasindistinguishablefrom‘God’,anditcertainlyhasmanysimilarities.
