HistoriansbelievethenamestartedinPhiladelphiainthemid-1960s.Busdriversandpoliceused“BlackFriday”todescribetheheavytrafficthatwouldblockcitystreetsthedayafterThanksgivingasshoppersheadedtothestores.

Businesses,however,didn’tlikethenegativetoneassociatedwiththe“BlackFriday”name.Intheearly1980s,amorepositiveexplanationofthenamebegantocirculate.Accordingtothisalternativeexplanation,BlackFridayisthedaywhenretailersfinallybegintoturnaprofitfortheyear.Inaccountingterms（会计行业）,operatingatalossiscalledbeing“inthered”becauseaccountantstraditionallyusedredinktoshownegativeamounts.Positiveamountswereusuallyshowninblackink.Thus,being“intheblack”isagoodthingbecauseitmeansstoresareoperatingataprofit.
