III.CourseObjectives
AmericanCultureandSocietyisacoremoduleforEnglishmajors.Itisaimedatequippingthestudentswiththeabilitytoknowthegeography,history,culture,societywellaboutthetargetcountry.Throughsystematicstudymakingthestudentsbettermeettherequirementsbythemarketeconomy.Thismoduleistomakethestudentsknowall-roundaspectsoftheUSAsuchasgeography,education,economy,peopleandtheirsociallifeetc.Studentsarerequiredtorememberandwriteoutvariousterms,importantcitynamesandbeabletoexplainhistoriceventswiththeaimthatthismodulecanlayasolidfoundationfortheirfuturefreecommunication.
IV.Methods
Inordertoaccomplishthecourseobjectives,thestudentwillreadextensively,prepareReadingResponseSheetsanddiscussthereadinginclassinordertointegratetheinformationintothestudent’spersonalexperience.Thefirstperiodofeachclasswillbeginwithadiscussionoftheassignedmaterialbytheinstructor;inthesecondperiodthestudentswillparticipateinanopendiscussionofthetopicscovered,ledbyinstructor.StudentswillalsodoPPTpresentationsduringsecondperiod.
V.Instructor’sPolicies
PleaseattendclassregularlyasIwilltakeattendanceeachday;becausethisclassisadiscussionorientedclass,yourprogressandtheprogressofyourclassmatesisdirectlyrelatedtoyourattendanceandtimelycompletionofyourassignedwork.Youareresponsibleforallworkthatyoumisswhenabsent.Iwilltrytokeepthingsasentertainingaspossible,giventhecontext.Iwillnotacceptlatework.Ifyoudon’thandinworkontime,youwillreceiveazerofortheassignment.

In-classpresentationwithPPT10%(presentationgradeisbasedoncorrectnessofinformation,creativity,useofPPT,timelinessandhowinterestingthepresentationis).
Termpaper(20%)(1000wordpaperonsametopicaspresentation,inMLAformat)gradedoncorrectinformation,correctgrammarandwordusage,correctcitationofsourcesandcorrectMLAform.Plagiarism(un-citedcopying)willreducepaperscoreby50%.

VII.TermPaper
Themostimportantelementinanalyticalwritingisclarity.Thereasonyoumustlearnpunctuation,grammar,spellingandhowtostructureyourpaperissothatyouwillbeabletocommunicateclearlywithyourreader.Itdoesn’tmatterifthatreaderisyourbestfriendorafamilymember,itisimpossibletogetyourthoughtacrosstothemcompletelywithoutproperuseofalltheconventionsofwrittenEnglish.
Theuseofthestandardconventionsbecomesmoreimportantandhasagreaterimpactwhenyouarewritingaspartofyourjoborinordertogetajob;employerstendtoevaluatetheirpotentialemployeesonhowwelltheycommunicateinwrittenEnglish. Manyapplicantsfor“good”jobsarerequiredtowriteanessayaspartoftheapplicationprocesssothattheemployerscanevaluatetheapplicant’scommunicationability.Therationaleisthatifyoucan’tconnectwithanaudienceeffectivelyinwriting,youmayhavedifficultyconnectingwithotherspeopleingeneral,includingco-workersandcustomers.
Thefirstelementtoconsiderinwrittencommunicationisthestructureofthewritingyouaredoing.Inmosttypesofwriting,asinmostformsofcommunication,thefirstthingyoumustdoiswriteanintroduction,andthereareseveralimportanttasksthatagoodintroductionshouldaccomplish.
Thefirsttaskofanintroductionistogettheattentionoftheaudience;whetherthattheaudienceisforanessayorforalecture,youcannotconnectwiththemunlesstheyarepayingattentiontowhatyouhavetooffer.Introductorystrategiesrangefromthetellingofapersonalanecdote,orshortstorythatforeshadowsthetopicoftheessay,topresentingawell-knownquoteorstartlingstatistic,toopeningwithaninterestingstatementorturnofphrase,whichwillcapturetheattentionoftheaudience.
Thesecondtaskofaneffectiveintroductionistheintroductionofthetopic. Theopeningshouldforeshadowthetopicandleadintothenextsegmentwhichisamoreforthrightexplanationofexactlywhattheissueyouwillbedealingwithis.Thisisnotathesisdiscussionbutleadsdirectlytoit;itpresentsandexplainsthetopicthatthethesiswilldealwithinmoredetail.
Thethirdtaskofaneffectiveintroductionisthethesisdiscussion.Thisisthesectionwhereyoudiscusswhatyouwilldointhecommunicationtofollow;youmaypresentyourargumenthereorsimplyletyouraudienceknowthatyouwillbedescribingyoursummervacation.Nomatterwhatyouintendtodo,itisimportantthatyouinformyouraudiencesoastoavoidanyconfusion;rememberthatclarityisthegoal.IntheAnalyticalEssaysforthisclass,youshoulddiscusswhatyouthinkthemainconceptpresentedinthetextwas,afterparticipatingintheclassdiscussionofthereading.
Aftertheintroductorysectionofyourpaper,comesthe“body.” Havinggottenthereader’sattention,introducedthetopicanddiscussedthethesis,thissectionpresentstheevidenceordetailsthatsupportthethesisofthepaper. Forthesehomeworkpapers,youmaycitedquotesfromthetext,quotefromtheclassdiscussionorintroduceinformationfromarelatedsourcesuchasanotherreading,songormovie.Inananalyticalpaper,thebodyisdesignedtoprovidespecificpointsofevidenceandprovidesthebulkofthesupportwhichpaintsaclearerpictureofwhateveritisthatyouaretryingtoexplain.
Thereisnoneedtolimityourselftoaspecificnumberofparagraphsinthebodyofthepaper,asthenumberofparagraphsshouldbedeterminedbytheamountofinformationyouarediscussingratherthananexternallyimposedformulafornumberofparagraphs.Inotherwords,eachpointofevidenceordetailshouldbegivenitsownparagraph,consistingofatopicsentence,supportinginformationandaconclusion.Ifyouhavetenpointsofevidence,thenyoumaywellhavetenormoreparagraphs,eachonedevotedtopresentingandexplainingaspecificpoint.Themostimportantthing,again,isclarity;youshouldpresenteachpointinastep-by-stepsequence,withaclearexplanation,andthenmovetothenextpoint.Whenyouhavediscussedalltheevidenceorpresentedallthedetails,itistimetomovetothefinalsection,theconclusion.
Theconclusionofyourpapershouldbethemostpowerfulelement;inananalyticalpaper,youcanshapetheaudience’sinterpretationoftheevidencewithapowerfulconclusion.Muchlikeinlife,thepointyouaretryingtomakecanbeforciblydrivenhomebytheconclusion.
Aswiththeintroductionandbodyofthepaper,therearespecifictaskstobeaccomplishedintheconclusion.Thefirstthingyouneedtodoistoremindyouraudienceofwhatthethesiswas.Afterdiscussingalltheevidence,itisimportanttorevisittheoriginalpurposeand“connectthedots”fortheminlightoftheinformationyouhavegiveninthebodyofthepaper.
Afteryourre-discussionofthethesis,youneedtosummarizetheevidenceandexplainhowitsupportsandrelatestothethesis.Inananalyticalpaper,thissectionisyouropportunitytoguidethereaderbyhelpingthemunderstandthereasonsthatyourthesisissound.
Yourfinaltaskistheconcludingstatement. Thefunctionofthiselementissimilartothatoftheopeningstatementinthatitspurposeistopackagetheargumentinawaythatwillstickwiththereader.Oneveryeffectivestrategyistorepeatanideaormajorphraseusedintheintroductorystatement;thistechnique“frames”yourwork,andbyrepeatingtheattention-gettingopeningintheconclusion,youmakeyourpointevenmorepointedly!
