Introduction

Windows XPServicePack2（SP2）containsmajorsecurityimprovementsdesignedtoprovidebetterprotectionagainsthackers,viruses,andworms.Windows XP SP2alsoimprovesthemanageabilityofthesecurityfeaturesinWindows XPandprovidesmoreandbetterinformationtohelpusersmakedecisionsthatmaypotentiallyaffecttheirsecurityandprivacy.MicrosoftstronglyurgescustomerswithWindows XPandWindows XPServicePack1-basedsystemstoupdatetoWindows XP SP2assoonaspossible.

MicrosoftrecommendsthefollowingreasonstoinstallWindows XP SP2:

∙HelpprotectyourcomputerfromharmfulattachmentscontainingvirusesthatcanspreadthroughInternetExplorer,OutlookExpress,andWindowsMessenger

∙ImproveyourprivacywhenyouareontheWebbyapplyingthesecuritysettingsthatguardyourPCtothefilesandcontentdownloadedusingInternetExplorer

∙AvoidpotentiallyunsafedownloadswithInternetExplorerdownloadmonitoringandtheInternetExplorerInformationBarwarnyouaboutpotentiallyharmfuldownloadsandgiveyoutheoptiontoblockfilesthatcouldbemalicious

∙ReduceannoyingInternetpop-upsusingthePop-UpBlockerinInternetExplorer,whichmakesbrowsingtheInternetmoreenjoyablebyhelpingyoureducetheunwantedadsandcontentthatpopupwhenyouarebrowsingtheWeb.

∙GetfirewallprotectionfromstartuptoshutdownwithWindowsFirewall,whichhelpsprotectWindows XPagainstvirusesandwormsthatcanspreadovertheInternet

∙TakecontrolofyoursecuritysettingswiththenewWindowsSecurityCenterthatallowsyoutoeasilyviewyoursecuritystatusandmanagekeysecuritysettingsinoneconvenientplace

∙GetthelatestWindowsupdateseasilywithenhancementstoWindows XP’sAutomaticUpdatesfeature

∙Helpprotectyoure-mailaddresswithimprovementstoOutlook Expressthathelpreduceunwantede-mailbylimitingthepossibilityofyoure-mailaddressbeingvalidatedbypotentialspammers

∙TakeactionagainstcrashescausedbyInternetExploreradd-onswiththenewAdd-OnManagerinInternetExplorertoeasilyviewandcontroladd-onstoreducethepotentialforcrashesandenjoyamoretrouble-freebrowsingexperience

∙GowirelesswithoutthehasslebecauseSP2improveswirelesssupportandsimplifiestheprocessofdiscoveringandconnectingtowirelessnetworksinyourhomeorontheroad

MicrosoftrecommendsthatcustomersuseacorporateupdatemanagementsolutionsuchasSMS 2003orSoftwareUpdateServices（SUS）asabestpracticeapproachtoimplementamanagedrolloutofWindows XP SP2.ThistechnicalpaperdescribestheprocessesneededtotestasmallsampledeploymentofWindows XP SP2usingSMS.WhilesomeproceduresinthisdocumentfocusspecificallyonSMS 2003AdvancedClients,mostproceduresapplytobothSMS 2003andSMS 2.0.

ThiswhitepaperassumesthatyouhaveanunderstandingofSMSandthatyouhaveaworkingknowledgeofsoftwaredistribution.Additionally,thisarticleassumesthatyourSMSinfrastructureisestablishedorthatyouwillestablishanSMSinfrastructurebeforeyoudeployWindows XP SP2.

ThepaperdoesnotdiscussdetailedplanninginformationthatyouneedtoconsiderforsoftwaredistributionorthepotentiallysignificantimpactthattheWindows XP SP2softwaredeploymentmighthaveonyourorganization’sinfrastructureusingSMS.Instead,youshouldrefertoChapter5“DistributingSoftware”intheSMS 2003OperationsGuideformoreinformationaboutsoftwaredistribution.YoushouldalsoreviewAppendixF,“CapacityPlanningforSMSComponentServers”andassociatedworksheetsinScenariosandProceduresforSMS 2003:

PlanningandDeployment.Thisappendixhelpsyoudeterminethelevelofperformanceyoumightexpectfromyoursiteandwillhelpyouplanforcapacity--inthiscase,theimplicationsofalargesoftwaredeployment.However,simpleWindows XPSP2deploymentsummaryinformationwascollectedbyMicrosofttoprovideyouballparknumbersthatcanhelpasyouplanyourWindows XP SP2softwaredeployment.FormoreinformationaboutsummaryresultsobtainedusingthiswhitepapertodeployWindows XP SP2,seeSimpleWindows XPSP2DeploymentSummary.

PreparingWindows XPSP2Files

BeforeyoucanbeginusingthispapertodeployWindows XP SP2,youmustdothefollowing:

∙CreatetheXPSP2.mofquery.

∙ObtaintheWindows XP SP2sourcefile（XPSP2.exe）andextractit.

∙ObtaintheXPProSP2.smspackagedefinitionfile.

Youshouldplaceallfileslistedpreviouslytoasinglefolderonthesiteserver,C:

\Xpsp2\forexample.

Important

IfareusingthistechnicalpapertodeployWindows XP SP2clientsinanSMS 2003sitewithoutaservicepack,thentheMicrosoftupdates832860and832862arealsorequiredfortheclients.FormoreinformationabouttheseMicrosoftupdates,seeApplyingMicrosoftUpdatesforSMS 2003.

UsethefollowingproceduretocreateaManagedObjectFormat（MOF）file,whichisusedtocreateaquery.ThefollowingcodeisasamplequerythatidentifiesSMSAdvancedClientcomputerswithsufficienthardwaretosupportanupgradetoWindows XP SP2.YouwillusethequeryinsubsequentstepsasamembershipruleforacollectionofcomputersthatreceivetheWindows XP SP2upgradeadvertisement.

Withoutusingthequery,youcouldadvertisetheupgradetocomputersthatcannotsuccessfullyruntheupgrade,resultinginafailedWindows XP SP2upgradedeployment.However,youcanalsocreateyourownqueryusingdifferentcriteriathatidentifycomputersthatyoucanupgradetoWindows XP SP2.
