OneofRedAdair’smostdangerousjobswasin1962.HeandhismenputoutanaturalgasfireintheSaharaDesertinAlgeria.Thefirehadbeenburningforsixmonths.ThefirewassofiercethatAmericanastronautJohnGlenncouldseeitfromspaceasheorbitedEarthandthesandaroundthefirehadmeltedintoglassfromtheextremeheat.Thisfamousfirewascalledthe“Devil’sCigaretteLighter”.
Adair’ssuccesswiththebigfireandearlierwellfirescapturedtheimaginationoftheAmericanfilmindustry.In1968,Hollywoodmadeanactionfilmcalled“Hellfighters”whichwasroughlybasedoneventsinRedAdair’slife.AdairsaidoneofthebesthonorsintheworldwastohaveJohnWayneplayhiminamovie.
In1998,Adairtroubleshotwhatwaspossiblytheworld’sworstoceanaccidentatthePiperAlphaoilplatformintheNorthSea.Onehundredandsixty-sevenmenwerekilledwhentheoilrig(油井钻探设备)explodedafteragasleak.NotonlydidRedAdairandhisteamhavetoputoutthefiresbuttheyalsohadtodealwithwindsblowingatmorethanonehundredandtwentykilometersanhour,aswellastheseawhichwasatleasttwentymetershigh.
InMarchof1991,RedAdairwenttoKuwaittoputoutaboutsevenhundredKuwaitfiresfollowingthePersianGulfWar.Hiseffortssavedmillionsoflitersofoil.Someexpertssaytheoperationalsohelpedpreventanenvironmentaltragedy.
RedAdairdiedat89on7August2004.ManyAmericansrememberhimasaverybraveman.Helivedhislifetroubleshootingdanger.Hewasknownforriskinghisownlifetosaveothers.

FarolderfishboneshavebeenfoundatsitesinsouthernAfrica,butthosebonesbelongedtofreshwaterinlandspecies;catchingsuchfishwouldhaverequiredlesscomplextechnology.Theoldestknownfishingequipmentfromthatareadatesfromaround12,000yearsago,butitincludesonlybonegorges,whicharestraighthookslesssophisticatedthancurved(弧形的)ones,andwasprobablyusedonlyinrivers,lakesandstreams.
