【篇一】瓦尔登湖英文读后感
WaldenisamasterpiecewrittenbyHenryDavidThoreau(1817-1862),whowas
borninConcord,Massachusetts. Theagehelivedhadwitnessedtheflourishof
capitalismaswellasthe prosperityofindustrializationandurbanization.
Duringthe19thcentury,theAmericaneconomydevelopedatsofastratethat
mostpeoplewereboundupinpursuingthematerialsatisfaction,whileingored
thespirituallifetoagreatextent.ButThoreauwasquitedifferentfromother
people,hedisdainedthemoderncivilizationandattached moreimportanceto
thespiritthanthematerial.Hethoughtmanypeopleofhistimelivedina
non-human-likemodernsocietyandmanymodernappliances,suchastrainsand
telegraphs,haddoneharmtopeople’sharmoniouslifepeaceandalsobrokenthe
relationshipbetweenhumanandnature.
Inordertoprovethatwithoutthemoderninstruments,peoplecanalso
liveahappylife,in1845,hemovedintoacabinontheshoreofWaldenPond
andlivetherealonefortwoyearstogetclosetothenature.Walden,isthe
famousbookmainlytalksabouthislifeandthoughtsduringthosedayslivingin
thewoods.
ThoreauwassohappywiththelifelivingnearthelakeofWaldenthathe
feltitasweetgracetohavethenature’accompanyandeventhesoundsofrain
andthesightsaroundhishousewerefullofsincerefriendship.Inhiseyes,
thenaturewasanintimatefriendofhimandallthingsinthenaturewere
livelyandvivacious. Andallkindsofanimalsinthewood,suchasfield
mouses,robinsandwildrabbitswereamicablytreatedandregardedashis
adorablecompanions.Heeventhoughtthatplantswerealsohadtherighttolive
equalwithhumanbeings.Justbecauseofthis,heevenblamedhimselffor
hittingchestnuttreeswithstones.Frommanywordsorsentences,wecaneasily
feelThoreau’sdeeploveandcaretowardsnature.
Besides,Thoreauwasapioneeringnaturelover,whocalledonpeopleto
stopdestoryingnaturebutprotectitbysettinghimself anexampletoothers.
Theconsciousnessoftheenvironmentalprotectionisbecomingmoreandmore
importantinourmodernsociety,whilethewholeworldistrappedinsome
seriousecologicalcrisisesresultingfromhuntingandkillinganimals,cutting
downtreesandpollutingtheriversforpursuitofhumanbeings’owninterests.
We allhavethecommonsensethatthenumberofwildlifeisdecreasing,the
areaoflakeisshrinking,andthewaterisnotclearanymore.What’sworse,
environmentproblemssuchasglobewarming,climatechangeandairandwater
pollutionaredeterioratingduringthecommercialprocess.Soit’shightime
thatweshouldrealizeweneverbethedominatorofthewholeworldconquring
nature,butshouldsparenoeffortstoimprovetheenvironmentrightaway.That
is,weshouldcomplywiththenaturallaws,makereasonableutilizationof
naturalresourcesandkeeptheharmoniousdevelopmentbetweenthesocietyand
theenvironment.Onlyinthiswaywillwehasanopportunitytoembraceabright
futureandachieveasustainablesociety.
Inthebook,Walden,Thoreaunotonlyadvocatedtheprotectionofnature,
butalsoencouragepeopletocomprehendandreturntonature.Hetoldususing
hisownexperiencethatbylivingasimplelifeclosetonature,wehumanbeings
willfindoutthetruevalueoflifeandsignificanceofexistence.
Afterreadingthebook,whatimpressedmemostisthedescriptionofthe
fascinatingsceneryaroundtheWaldenpound,especiallythesesentences:
“Alake
isthelandscape’smostbeautifulandexpressivefeature.Itisearth’seye;
lookingintowhichthebeholdermeasuresthedepthofhisownnature.The
fluviatiletreesnexttheshorearetheslendereyelasheswhichfringeit,and
thewoodedhillsandcliffsaroundareitsoverhangingbrows”.ToThoreau,the
Waldenlakeislikeacharmingandmeltinggirl,whohasslendereyelashesand
likestodressherselfindifferentbeautifulclotheswiththechangesof
differentseasons.
Everymorningaftergettingup,ThoreauwouldhaveabathintheWalden
laketostartanewday.Afterthat,heusedtowanderaroundthepondand
refreshhimselfwiththefreshair.Insummerdays,hecultivatedapieceof
landandgrowedbeans,blackberries,johnswortsandthelike.Thedepictionof
hisleisureruralityspontaneouslyremindsmeofTaoYuanming,thefamous
Chinesepoet,wholivedintheJinDynastyandmadehislifemeaningfulby
returningtothenatureandperfectinghimself.IfThoreauandTaoYuanming
livedinthesameperiodandplace,theywouldprobablybecomebestfriends.
Fromthebook,weknowthatduringtheyearswhenThoreaulivednearthe
Walden,hedidnotcompletelyisolatehimselffromtheoutsideworld.Sometimes
hewenttothetownanddidoddjobsandwouldreceivevisitorsandfriendsin
hiscabinattimes.AsImentionbefore,theintentionforhislivinginthe
woodswasthathewantedtoteachpeoplehowtoliveasimplelife,achieve
enjoymentfromthenature,freeoneselffromthestraineddailylifeandwhatis
moreimportantistoreevaluatethevalueofsociallife.
Thoreau’sthoughofenjoyingasimplelifehasamorerealistic
significanceandhavebecomeavaluablespiritualwealthinourmodernsociety.
Withthedevelopmentofthematerialcivilization,people’sdesiresareswelling
limitlesslyandmanypeoplearebusywiththepursuitofwealthandluxurious
lifebyanymeans,includingattheexpenseofnature.However,eveninthe
societymateriallyaffluentandtechnologicallyadvanced,peoplearenotbe
morehappierthanthosepeoplewholivedcenturiesago,butevenfeelless
satisfactoryandcomplaintmoreabouttheirpresentlifeasaresultofhaving
unboundeddesiresofgettingmoreandbetter.Therefore,manypeoplewhopossess
alathavebecomeslavesofmachine,workingmorebutdonothavetheabilityto
