BorninSeattle,Washingtonon28October1956,GateswasnamedWilliamHenryafterhisfatherandgrandfather.Fromthebeginning,hewasanextremelyintelligentchild.HehadreadthewholeWorldBookEncyclopediabytheageofnine.Hisfavoritesubjectsatschoolwerescienceandmathsandhisfavoritepastimewas“thinking”.Hewasayearyoungerthanmostofhisclassmatesandsmallforhisage.Theskinny,left-handedboywasoftentheobjectofjokesandfoundhimselftreatedasanoutsiderbyhispeers.

By1975,Gatesandapartner,PaulhaddevelopedasoftwareprogramcalledBASIC.Thiswasnotthefirstprogramcreated,butitsinventorswerethefirsttodecidethatpeoplewhowantedtouseitshouldpayforit.Untilthen,thecomputerhardware—themachinesthemselves—hadbeentheexpensivepartofcomputing.
BASICwasasuccessbecauseuntilitcamealongtherehadbeennoefficientwayofgettingcomputerstocarryoutinstructions.Althoughhehadnotyetcompletedhisdegree,Gatesleftuniversityandwenttoworkfulltimeforthenewcompanyhehadformedcalled“Microsoft.”
