WhyIsBambooDying?
Inthewild,thegiantpandaeatsonlytwokindsofbambooplants.Oneistheumbrellabamboo;theotheristhefountainbamboo.Bothkindshavealifecyclethatlasts100years.Duringthisperiod,ayoungplantsproutsfromaseedandmaturesintoalargeplantwithmanyspear-shapedleaves.Initshundredthyearthebambooplantflowers,formsseeds,anddies.
LastyeartheumbrellaandthefountainbamboosthatgrowinChinabecame100yearsold.Theplantsgrewfromseedsformedinthelate1870’s.Nowalmostallofthesebambooplantsaredead.Theseedsthatformedbeforetheplantsdiedhavefallentotheground.Youngshootsnowgrowfromtheseeds.However,itwillbemanymonthsbeforetheshootsarelargeenoughtobeusedforfoodbythepandas.Meanwhilethelargeblackandwhiteanimalscontinuetodie.
