Abstract:
Languageandcultureshareacommonlotaslipsandteethdo.Languageisthecarrierofculture,andisthereflectionofcultureintheformofspeech.Thisthesisanalysesmultitudinousproblemsthroughthedemonstrationofrelationshipsbetweenlanguageandculture,especiallytheproblemthattheimportanceofcultureteachingforEnglishlearninghavebeenignoredintheprocessofmiddleschoolEnglishteaching.TheauthorfurtherelaboratesthesignificanceofdevelopinginterculturalcommunicationawarenessinmiddleschoolEnglishteaching.Thesignificanceisasfollows:
helpinglearnerstolearnefficiently,promotinglearners’comprehensiveabilitiesandimprovinglearners’appropriatenessofcommunication.Accordingly,theauthorsuggeststhreewaystodeveloplearners’interculturalcommunicationawareness.Concretely,theyare:
classinfiltration,activityinfiltration,interculture-knowledgelectures.

Introduction
Intheserecentyears,interculturalcommunicationawarenesshasbeenpaidmoreandmoreattentiontointheprocessofEnglishteachinginChina.Forthis,ithasbeenanuncontroversialcommonsensetodeveloplearners’interculturalcommunicationawarenessandabilityinthepracticeofEnglishteachinginChina.However,thefactthatmiddleschoolEnglishteachingfocussimplyonlanguageteachinginform,tosomeextend,hasdominatedthewholeprocessofEnglishteaching.ThisresultsinproblemsinthecourseofEnglishteaching,wherethereisignoranceofinterculturalcommunicationawarenessandalackofinterculturalingredients.However,cultureplaysanimportantroleinEnglishteachingasfamouslinguistE.SapirhasarguedinhisworksLanguagethatthereliessomethingbehindalanguage,andlanguagecannotexistwithoutculture.What’smore,onefamousscholarathomeoncesaidthatLanguageandcultureshareacommonlotaslipsandteethdo(DengYanchang,1989:
24).Aslanguagesharesacloserelationshipwithculture,alanguage,tosomeextend,reflectsthebackgroundinformationofacertaintypeofculture.Similarly,acertaintypeofculturewillgreatlyinfluencealanguage,suchasitsvocabulary,grammar,eventhewayofpeopleexpressingtheirideas.So,itiscrucialtolearnrelevantcultureandtodeveloplearners’interculturalcommunicationawarenesswhenlearningEnglishforChineselearners.ThroughthediscussionoftherelationshipbetweeninterculturalcommunicationawarenessandEnglishlearning,thispaperaimstodemonstratethesignificancetodevelopinterculturalcommunicationawareness.Thenitfurtherliststhreewaystodeveloplearners’interculturalcommunicationawareness.Finally,itisexpectedtogiveassistancestomiddleschoolEnglishteachinginChina
Ⅰ.RelationshipbetweenLanguageandCulture
Languagesharesacloserelationshipwithculture.Languageabilityisakindofspecialskillgainedduringthehumanbeingevolution.SociallinguistGoodenough,.believesthatlanguageisakindofsocialculturalphenomenon,andtherelevantresearchesshouldbedonefromtheperspectiveoftherelationshipbetweencultureandlanguageinhisbook.Hearguesthatlanguageinasocietyisoneaspectofthesociety’sculture,andtheparticularityoflanguageshowsthatitisamaintooloflearningcultureduringtheprocessoflearningandusing.Withoutknowingitsculture,aforeignlanguagecannotbecomprehendedandusedcorrectly(Goodenough,.1981:
12).
Languageisthecarrierofculture.Dr.Sapirstressedthatlanguageshapesourperceptions,andhethoughtthatunderstandingculturalbehaviorwasimpossibleunlessitsdevelopmentthroughlanguagewasthoroughlytraced(E.Sapir,1921:
23).Languageexpressesandembodiesculturalreality.Ifweareindifferentcountries,wemustknowtheircultures,thus,wecanusethelanguagefreely.Ontheotherhand,language,asaproductofculture,helpsperpetuatetheculture,andthechangesinlanguageusesreflecttheculturechangesinreturn.Languageandcultureareinterdependableandhaveinfluenceoneachother.Languageistheveryimportantcarrierofculture,butculturehasconstrainsonlanguage.Languageplaysanimportantroleinallkindsofactivitiesofhumanbeing,anditisanindispensablepartofsocialactivity.Languagehasobviousfeaturesofculture:
itisregular;itisparticulartohumanbeing;itisacquired,notgeneinherited.Historically,languageisclosedrelatedwithnation.People,whohavethesameancestor,oftenspeakthesamelanguage,whereas,thereisnonecessaryrelationbetweenlanguageandculture.Itisnationalculturethatdecidesthechoiceoflanguagethatisthesamegeographicenvironment,sameeconomicstructure,samesocialinstitution,andthesamestyleoflivingofthesamepsychologicalqualitysharedbypeople.
Languageisthereflectionofculture.Culturechangesconstantlyintheprocessofsocialdevelopment.Thesechangescanbereflectedintheusingoflanguage.Althoughthebasicingredientsofalanguagecanalter,therearesomechangeslikevocabulary,grammarandsomesentencestructures.Eventhecomponentsofacertainculturelikepeople’sfeeling,thoughts,costumesandtheirwaysofdoingthingscanbeembodiedintheformofspeech.
Inconclusion,languagesharesacloserelationshipwithculture.Languageisthecarrierofcultureandisthereflectionofculture.Asculture,languageisthecommonfeatureofhumanbeings,anditistheindicationdistinguishingmankindandanimal.Thissystemisdeterminedbyhumaninheritinggenes,andallthepeoplesharethesameinheritinggenesoflanguagesystem.Humanlanguagephenomenoncanbedividedintotwolevels:
languagecapabilityandlanguagestructure.Theformerissharedbyallthehumanbeing,distinguishedwithanimals,whilethelatterisbasedondifferentnations,differentcultures.Amanwiththecapabilityoflanguagemustliveinalanguageenvironment.Onlyinthiscasecanheacquirethelanguage.Awayfromtheenvironment,peoplecannotachievethispurpose.Inaword,tomasteralanguage,onemustliveintheverylanguageculturalenvironment,ormakeeveryefforttolearnthelanguageculture.
Ⅱ.TheSignificanceofDevelopingLearners’InterculturalCommunicationAwareness
InterculturalcommunicationawarenessisveryimportanttohelplearnerstolearnEnglishefficientlyanditishelpfultopromotelearners’comprehensiveability.What’smostimportantisthatdevelopinglearners’interculturalcommunicationawarenessplaysaveryimportantroleinimprovinglearners’appropriatenessofcommunication.Thedevelopingoflearners’interculturalcommunicationawarenessmeetslearner’sneedsoflearningEnglishandfitsfortherequirementofintercommunicationbetweendifferentcountries.Inevitably,thedevelopingoflearners’interculturalcommunicationawarenesshasirreplaceablesignificanceforEnglishteachinginChina.
.HelpingLearnerstoLearnEfficiently
Developmentoflearners’interculturalcommunicationawarenesswillgreatlyhelplearnerstolearnEnglishefficiently.Ashavedemonstratedabove,languageandculturesharerelationshipswitheachother,soitisclearthatinterculturalcommunicationawarenessishelpfultoadvancelearners’learning.ItisacommonsenseinEnglishlearningthatonewillfinditdifficulttounderstandcompletelythemeaningoftheEnglishsentences,althoughhehasrecognizedthemeaningofthesewordswhichconstructthewholesentence.Thereasonofthisisthatthesesentencesinvolveculturecontents,whichChinesestudentsfeelstrangetodealwith.Still,usuallywehavethisexperience:
whenwearelisteningtosomethingfamiliartous,nomatterwhatisconcerned,usuallywecaneasilyunderstand.Eveniftherearesomenewwordsinthematerial,weareabletoguesstheirmeaningsaccordingtoitscontext.However,whenweencountersomeunfamiliarmaterialorsomethingcloselyrelatedtoculturalbackground,wefeelitratherdifficult.Evenifthematerialiseasy,weonlyknowtheliteralmeaning,butcan’tunderstanditsconnotation,becausewelackknowledgeofculturalbackground.ReadingEnglisharticlesrequiresacertainlanguagebasis,butthecompetenceofreadingcomprehensionisnotentirelyrelatedtoone’slanguagelevel.Knowledgeofculturalbackgroundisalsoimportant.Readingisaprocessaffectedbyintegrationofone’slanguageknowledge,culturalbackgroundknowledgeandotherprofessionalknowledge,andaprocessofcontinuousguessesandcorrectionsaccordingtoavailablelanguagematerial,culturalbackgroundandlogicalreasoning.Asaresultofthis,learnerswillspendmoreandmoretimeonponderingthesentenceswithoutaclearunderstandingofthissentence.Consequently,theyhavewastedmuchoftheirtime.However,itisknownthatthereisnotmuchsparetimegiventomiddleschoolstudentsandtheyshouldlearnasmuchaspossibleinthelimitedtime.Aslanguageisthereflectionofculture,tosomeextent,learninglanguagemeansleaningcultureitself.Inotherwords,thefourbasiccoursesofEnglishlearning:
listening,speaking,readingandwritingcontainmanycomponentsaboutculture.Thatistosay,withoutknowingcultureandculture-relatedknowledge,itishardtolearnEnglishwell.
