Thehumanvoice:

Howcanwespeakpowerfullytomakechangeintheworld?
WhatI'dliketosuggest,thereareanumberofhabitsthatweneedtomoveawayfrom.I'veassembledforyourpleasureheresevendeadlysinsofspeaking.I'mnotpretendingthisisanexhaustivelist,buttheseseven,Ithink,areprettylargehabitsthatwecanallfallinto.
First,gossip.Speakingillofsomebodywho'snotpresent.Notanicehabit,andweknowperfectlywellthepersongossiping,fiveminuteslater,willbegossipingaboutus.
Second,judging.Weknowpeoplewhoarelikethisinconversation,andit'sveryhardtolistentosomebodyifyouknowthatyou'rebeingjudgedandfoundwantingatthesametime.
Third,negativity.Youcanfallintothis.Mymother,inthelastyearsofherlife,becameverynegative,andit'shardtolisten.Irememberoneday,Isaidtoher,"It'sOctober1today,"andshesaid,"Iknow,isn'titdreadful?
"It'shardtolistenwhensomebody'sthatnegative.
Andanotherformofnegativity,complaining.Well,thisisthenationalartoftheU.K.It'sournationalsport.Wecomplainabouttheweather,sport,aboutpolitics,abouteverything,butactually,complainingisviralmisery.It'snotspreadingsunshineandlightnessintheworld.
Excuses.We'veallmetthisguy.Maybewe'veallbeenthisguy.Somepeoplehaveablamethrower.Theyjustpassitontoeverybodyelseanddon'ttakeresponsibilityfortheiractions,andagain,hardtolistentosomebodywhoisbeinglikethat.
Thesixthoftheseven,embroidery,exaggeration.Itdemeansourlanguage,actually,sometimes.Forexample,ifIseesomethingthatreallyisawesome,whatdoIcallit?
Andthen,ofcourse,thisexaggerationbecomeslying,andwedon't
wanttolistentopeopleweknowarelyingtous.
Andfinally,dogmatism.Theconfusionoffactswithopinions.Whenthosetwothingsgetconflated,you'relisteningintothewind.Youknow,somebodyisbombardingyouwiththeiropinionsasiftheyweretrue.It'sdifficulttolistentothat.
Soheretheyare,sevendeadlysinsofspeaking.ThesearethingsIthinkweneedtoavoid.Butisthereapositivewaytothinkaboutthis?
Yes,thereis.I'dliketosuggestthattherearefourreallypowerfulcornerstones,foundations,thatwecanstandonifwewantourspeechtobepowerfulandtomakechangeintheworld.Fortunately,thesethingsspellaword.Thewordis"hail,"andithasagreatdefinitionaswell.I'mnottalkingaboutthestuffthatfallsfromtheskyandhitsyouonthehead.I'mtalkingaboutthisdefinition,togreetoracclaimenthusiastically,whichishowIthinkourwordswillbereceivedifwestandonthesefourthings.
Sowhatdotheystandfor?
Seeifyoucanguess.TheH,honesty,ofcourse,beingtrueinwhatyousay,beingstraightandclear.TheAisauthenticity,justbeingyourself.Afriendofminedescribeditasstandinginyourowntruth,whichIthinkisalovelywaytoputit.TheIisintegrity,beingyourword,actuallydoingwhatyousay,andbeingsomebodypeoplecantrust.AndtheLislove.Idon'tmeanromanticlove,butIdomeanwishingpeoplewell,fortworeasons.Firstofall,Ithinkabsolutehonestymaynotbewhatwewant.Imean,mygoodness,youlookuglythismorning.Perhapsthat'snotnecessary.Temperedwithlove,ofcourse,honestyisagreatthing.Butalso,ifyou'rereallywishingsomebodywell,it'sveryhardtojudgethematthesametime.I'mnotevensureyoucandothosetwothingssimultaneously.Sohail.
Also,nowthat'swhatyousay,andit'sliketheoldsong,itiswhatyousay,it'salsothewaythatyousayit.Youhaveanamazingtoolbox.Thisinstrumentisincredible,andyetthisisatoolboxthatveryfewpeople
haveeveropened.I'dliketohavealittlerummageintherewithyounowandjustpullafewtoolsoutthatyoumightliketotakeawayandplaywith,whichwillincreasethepowerofyourspeaking.
Register,forexample.Now,falsettoregistermaynotbeveryusefulmostofthetime,butthere'saregisterinbetween.I'mnotgoingtogetverytechnicalaboutthisforanyofyouwhoarevoicecoaches.Youcanlocateyourvoice,however.SoifItalkuphereinmynose,youcanhearthedifference.IfIgodownhereinmythroat,whichiswheremostofusspeakfrommostofthetime.Butifyouwantweight,youneedtogodownheretothechest.Youhearthedifference?
Wevoteforpoliticianswithlowervoices,it'strue,becauseweassociatedepthwithpowerandwithauthority.That'sregister.
Thenwehavetimbre.It'sthewayyourvoicefeels.Again,theresearchshowsthatweprefervoiceswhicharerich,smooth,warm,likehotchocolate.Wellifthat'snotyou,that'snottheendoftheworld,becauseyoucantrain.Goandgetavoicecoach.Andthereareamazingthingsyoucandowithbreathing,withposture,andwithexercisestoimprovethetimbreofyourvoice.
Thenprosody.Iloveprosody.Thisisthesing-song,themeta-languagethatweuseinordertoimpartmeaning.It'srootoneformeaninginconversation.Peoplewhospeakallononenotearereallyquitehardtolistentoiftheydon'thaveanyprosodyatall.That'swheretheword"monotonic"comesfrom,ormonotonous,monotone.Also,wehaverepetitiveprosodynowcomingin,whereeverysentenceendsasifit
wereaquestionwhenit'sactuallynotaquestion,it'sastatement?
Andifyourepeatthatone,it'sactuallyrestrictingyourabilityto
communicatethroughprosody,whichIthinkisashame,solet'stryandbreakthathabit.
Pace.Icangetveryexcitedbysayingsomethingreallyquickly,orIcan
slowrightdowntoemphasize,andattheendofthat,ofcourse,isour
oldfriendsilence.There'snothingwrongwithabitofsilenceinatalk,is
there?
Wedon'thavetofillitwithumsandahs.Itcanbeverypowerful.
Ofcourse,pitchoftengoesalongwithpacetoindicatearousal,butyou
candoitjustwithpitch.Wheredidyouleavemykeys?
(Higherpitch)
Wheredidyouleavemykeys?
So,slightlydifferentmeaninginthosetwodeliveries.
Andfinally,volume.(Loud)Icangetreallyexcitedbyusingvolume.Sorryaboutthat,ifIstartledanybody.Or,Icanhaveyoureallypayattentionbygettingveryquiet.Somepeoplebroadcastthewholetime.Trynottodothat.That'scalledsodcasting,Imposingyoursoundonpeoplearoundyoucarelesslyandinconsiderately.Notnice.
Ofcourse,wherethisallcomesintoplaymostofalliswhenyou'vegotsomethingreallyimportanttodo.Itmightbestandingonastagelikethisandgivingatalktopeople.Itmightbeproposingmarriage,askingforaraise,aweddingspeech.Whateveritis,ifit'sreallyimportant,youoweittoyourselftolookatthistoolboxandtheenginethatit'sgoingtoworkon,andnoengineworkswellwithoutbeingwarmedup.Warmupyourvoice.
Actually,letmeshowyouhowtodothat.Wouldyouallliketostandupforamoment?
