Thiscourseaimstointroducestudentstothebasicteachings,practices,andculturalexpressionsofthemajorformsofBuddhismfromancientAsiatothemodernWest.DrawinguponbothsecondaryworksandselectedBuddhistprimarytexts,studentswillbeintroducedtothethreemajortraditionsoftheSouthern,EasternandCentralregionsofAsia,knownasTheravada,Mahayana,andVajrayanarespectively.
Thetraditionswillbeevaluatedphilosophically,andwillbeplacedwithinthespecifichistoricalandsocialcontextswithinwhichtheyaroseandflourished.Studentswillbeencouragedtothinkcriticallyabouttheissuesraisedinclass,toquestiontheideasbroughtforthandtoconstantlyassesstheminlightoftheirownunderstandingofthehumancondition.
ThiscoursemeetsthegeneraleducationrequirementsofareaC-3.Itprovidesthekeytounderstandingoneoftheworld’sgreatbodiesofliteratureandartandexploresitsinfluencethroughtheages.Thecourseaimstocultivateadiverseviewoftheworldanditspeopletherebyhelpingstudentstobecomemoreconscientiousglobalcitizens.
