Homeworkhasneverbeenterriblypopularwithstudentsandevenmanyparents,
butinrecentlyyearsithasbeenparticularlyscorned.Schooldistrictsacrossthe
country,mostrecentlyLosAngelesUnified,arerevisingtheirthinkingonthis
educationalritual.Unfortunately,L.A.Unifiedhasproducedaninflexiblepolicy
whichmandatesthatwiththeexceptionofsomeadvancedcourses,homeworkmayno
longercountformorethan10%ofastudent'sacademicgrade.
Thisruleismeanttoaddressthedifficultythatstudentsfromimpoverished
orchaotichomesmighthaveincompletingtheirhomework.Butthepolicyisunclear
andcontradictory.Certainly,nohomeworkshouldbeassignedthatstudentscannot
completeontheirownorthattheycannotdowithoutexpensiveequipment.Butif
thedistrictisessentiallygivingapasstostudentswhodonotdotheirhomework
becauseofcomplicatedfamilylives,itisgoingriskilyclosetotheimplication
thatstandardsneedtobeloweredforpoorchildren.
