Inthenightalittlebirdwithabrokenwingfelldownthechimneyandhoppedintooneoftheshoes.VeryearlyinthemorningPiccolawokeup.Shejumpedoutofbedandrantolookintohershoes.
Thereshesawthelittlebirdinoneoftheshoes.ShepickeduptheshoeandrantoshowherChristmaspresenttohermother.Shesaid,"SantaClausdidnotforgetme,Mamma."
2.Pandora'sbox
Manyyearsagoallthewordwasverybeautifulandnobodywaseversickorunhappy.
AtthattimetherelivedabeautifullittlegirlnamedPandora.Onedaygaveherawonderfulboxtiedwithagoldencordandmadeherpromisenottoopenit.Pandoraandherlittleplaymate,Epimetheus,oftenlookedattheboxandwonderedwhatwasinit.
ForalongtimePandorakeptherpromisetothefairy,butatlastshewantedtopeepintothebox.Sheuntiedthecordandliftedthecoveronlyalittle.
Outflewhundredsofbadlittlefairies.TheystungPandoraandshefellonthefloorandscreamed.TheystungEpimetheus,too.
Thentheyflewoutofdoorsandstungallthechildrenintheland.ByandbyPandoraheardalittlevoicecrying,“Letmeout,andIwillhelpyou,”
Sheopenedthebox,andoutflewabeautifullittlefairy.ShetoldPandorathathernamewasHope.ShekissedherandEpimetheus,andmadethemwell.Thenawaysheflewtohelptheotherchildren.
Tothisday,whenpeoplearesickorunhappy,thegoodlittlefairy,Hope,comestocomfortthem.
3.TheCrabandHisMother
“Mychild,”saidaCrabtoherson,“whydoyouwalksoawkward?
Ifyouwishtomakeagoodappearance,youshouldgostraightforward,andnottoonesideasyoudosoconstantly.”
“Idowishtomakeagoodappearance,Mamma”saidtheyoungCrab;“andifyouwillshowmehow,Iwilltrytowalkstraightforward.”
“Why,thisistheway,ofcourse,”saidthemother,asshestartedofftotheright,“No,thisistheway,”saidshe,asshemadeanotherattempt,totheleft.
ThelittleCrabsmiled.“Whenyoulearntodoityourself,youcanteachme,”hesaid,andhewentbacktohisplay.
4.TheWolfandTheCrane
OnedayaWolf,whowaseatinghisdinnermuchtoofast,swallowedabone,whichstuckinhisthroatandpainedhimverymuch.Hetriedtogetitout,butcouldnot.
JustthenhesawaCranepassingby.“Dearfiend,”saidhetotheCrane,“thereisabonestickinginmythroat.Youhaveagoodlongneck;can'tyoureachdownandpullitout?
Iwillpayyouwellforit.”“I'lltry,”saidtheCrane.ThenheputhisheadintotheWolf’smouth,betweenhissharpteeth,andreachingdown,pulledoutbone.“There!
”saidtheWolf,“Iamgladitisout;Imustbemorecarefulanothertime.”“Iwillgonow,ifyouwillpayme,”saidtheCrane.
“Payyou,indeed!
”criedtheWolf.“BethankfulthatIdidnotbiteyourheadoffwhenitwasinmymouth.Yououghttobecontentwiththat.”
5.Handel,TheMusician
Longagothey'relivedinGermanyalittleboynamedGeorgeFrederickHandel.
Helovedmusicandwantedtolearntoplaythepiano,buthisfatherwantedhimtobecomealawyerandwouldnotlethimtakemusiclessons.
Therewasalittle,old-fashionedpianoupintheattic.Atnight,wheneverybodywasasleep,thelittleboyusedtocreepupthestairsandplaysoftlytohimself.
Whenhewasaboutsevenyearsold,hewentwithhisfathertovisitawealthyDuke.TheDukelivedinabeautifulpalacewithmanylargerooms.Therewasawonderfulorganinoneoftherooms.
WhilehisfatherandtheDukesattalking,littleHandelslippedaway.Hesatdownattheorganandbegantoplay.Hislittlehandsmovedoverthekeysandtheroomwasfilledwithasweetestmusic.
Whenhefinishedplaying,heturnedaroundandsawhisfatherandtheDukelookingathim.TheDukeaskedhimwherehehadlearnedtoplay,andtheboytoldhimaboutthepianointheattic.
ThentheDukepersuadedHandle'sfathertolethimstudymusic,andhebecameafamouscomposer.
6.FritzAndTheWolf
FritzwasthesonofafarmerwholivedinalonelypartofRussia.Therudecabinwhichwashishomestoodinadarkforest,severalmilesfromthenearestvillage.
OnedayFritzwassenttothevillagewithaletter.Itwasthemiddleofwinterandthesnowlayontheeveninginvisitinghisfriends.Itwaslate,andthemoonwasupbeforehesetoutforhome.Whenhewasashortdistancefromhisfather'shouse,Fritzsawadarkobjectbeforehiminthepath.
Atfirsthethoughtinwasdog.Ashecamenearerhefoundthatiswasafiercewolfthatstoodinhisway.Fritzknewthatitwouldbeuselesstotrytorunaway.Hehadtothinkofsomeothermeansofescape.Hehadheardthathunterssometimesescapedfrombearsbylyingflatonthegroundasiftheyweredead,andhethoughthewouldtrythisplanwiththewolf.
Withoutamoment'sdelay,hethrewhimselfdownonthesnow.Thewolfcameslowlytowardhim.Itstoodbesidehimforaminute.Quitestill,andthenbegantosniffabouthimFritzdidnotdaretomove.Byandthewolfreachedhisneck,andrestingonefootonhisbody,lookedathimclosely.Fritzfeltthewaterfromthejawsofthewolfdroppingonhisface.
“Deathorlifenow!
”saidFritztohimself.Quickasthought,heseizedthepawswhichwererestingoneithersideofhisneck,drewthemtightlyoverhisshoulders,sprangupandwalkedoffwiththewolfhangingonhisback.Sotightlydidhedrawthewolf’sneckagainsthisshoulders,thattheanimalcouldscarcelybreatheandtriedinvaintouseitsteeth.Withitshindpaws,however,itscratchedfuriouslyatFritz’slegs,andmadeitdifficultforhimtowalk.
Atlengthwithhisstrangeloadhereachedhisfather’sdoor.“Father!
father!
”hecried,buttherewasnoreply.Fritzwasnearlytiredout.Hecouldnotknockwithhishandandhedidnotdaretolifthisfootforfearoffalling.Allthathecoulddowastoturnroundanddashthewolfagainstthedoorwithallhismight.Thenoiseawokeeveryoneinthecabin.“Father!

Thefarmerlostontimeinopeningthedoorandstood,guninhand,readytoshoot.“Donotshoot,”saidtheboy,“thewolfisonmyback.Thedogs!

”AtthismomentFritz’smotherletloosetwogreatdogsthatweretiedinthecabin,andthathadbeenbarkingfuriously.
SuddenlyFritzthrewthewolffromhisshoulders,andthedogs,seeingthedangeroftheiryoungmaster,flewatthewolf,andsoonhaditintheirpower.Fritzdidnotwishthewolftobekilledbythedogs,forthenhecouldnotsaythathehadcaughtalivewolf.Asquickasthoughthetookaropeandtieditroundthewolf'sneck,atthesametimetellinghisfathertopullthedogsaway.
Whenthiswasdone,Fritzputthebadlywoundedandmuchfrightenedanimalintoabox.Therehekeptituntil,ashorttimeafterward,amancamealongandboughtittosendtoamenagerie.Isupposethewolfisstilllookingitswhiteteethtothecrowdsofboysandgirlswhogotolookatthewildanimals.
7.ThePricelessDog
AladywasgoingbysteamerfromacitytoanotherinAmerica.Onboardwithherwereherbabyboyandamaid.Themaidwascarryingthechildinherarms.
Asthesteamercameneartothelanding-place,itbegantoslackenspeed.Themaidwalkedtothesideofthevesseltolookover,whenallatoncethechildsprangoutofherarms,andfellintothewaterbelow.Theswiftstreamcarrieditquicklyaway.
Themotherwasnearlywildwithgriefandfear.Thesailorsbegantoloweraboat.Buteveryonecouldseethatthechildwouldbedrownedbeforetheboatcouldreachit.Whatwastobedone?
Amongthepeopleonboardwasagentlemanwhohadbeenquietlyreadinginanotherpartofthesteamer.Hearingthecriesofthemother,hecamequicklyforwardandsaid,"Canyougivemesomethingthechildhasworn?
"
Themaidgavehimatinyapron,whichhadbeenleftinherhandsasshetriedtosavethechildfromfalling.ThegentlemanturnedtoafineNewfoundlanddogthatstoodnear,lookingupintohisface.Hepointedfirsttotheapron,andthentothespotwherethechildhadsunk.
Inaninstantthenobledogsprangintotheriver.Youcanthinkhoweveryoneonboardfelt!
Wouldthedogreachthechildintimetosaveitslife?
Soonthedogwasseenfarawaywithsomethinginhismouth.Bravelyheswamagainstthestrongstream,butitwasfearedthathisstrengthwouldsoongiveway.Morethanoneonboardcriedforjoyastheboatreachedhimandthesailorsdrewchildanddogfromthewater.
Whentheywerebroughtonboardthesteamer,themotherwentfirsttoherlittleboytoseethathewasalive.Thensherushedforward,andthrowingherarmsroundthedog'sneck,burstintotears.Shekissedhisshaggyhead,andsaidtohisowner,"Oh,sir;Imusthavethisdog!
