3)GregorMendel(1822—1884)Czech.Thefatherofgenetic.Hegrewpeaplantsanddevelopedideasonheredity(遗传)andinheritedcharacteristics.Between1856—1863hegrew28,000peaplants.Heexaminedsevenkindsofseedandplantcharacteristicsanddevelopedsomelawsofinheritance.
4)MarieCurie(Polish)(1867-1934)wasborninPoland,movedtoParisandstudiedchemistryandphysicsthere.ShemarriedPierreCurieandtogethertheystudiedradioactivematerialsanddiscoveredradium.In1911shereceivedtheNobelPrizeinChemistry.Herdeathin1934wasalmostcertainlyduetoradiationinherwork.
5)ThomasEdison(1847----1931) Hewasalreadyaninventorofotherelectricaldevices(phonograph,electriclightbulb)whenin1882hedesignedasystemforprovidingNewYorkwithelectricityfromacentralpowerstation.Thiswasatremendousachievement,whichhadpreviouslybeenthoughtimpossible.
6)LeonardodaVinci(Italian)(1452-1519)HewasafamousItalianartistwhoseskillforshowinghumanskintonesmadehispaintingsseemtocomealive.Heusedtostudydeadpeopleinordertomakehispaintingsasaccurateaspossible.Someofhisfamouspaintingsinclude“TheAdorationoftheMagi”andthe“TheLastSupper”.LaterinhislifehelivedinFrancewherehedesignedasubmarine(潜水艇)andaflyingmachine.
7)British.Hedidresearchintodifferentgasesanddiscoveredthemedicalvalueofnitrousoxide(laughinggas)asananaesthetic.(麻醉药)In1815hedevelopedasafetylampforminers.
8)ZhangHeng,Chinese(78-----139)Heinventedthefirstseismographtoindicateinthedirectionofanearthquake.Itwasintheshapeofacylinderwitheightdragonheadsroundthetop,eachwithaballinitsmouth.Aroundthebottomwereeightfrogsdirectlyunderadragon’shead.Whenanearthquakeoccurred,aballfelloutofthedragon’smouth,makinganoise.
