ⅡStatusinquoofcollegestudents’readingabilityandtheanalysisoftheobstacles
Englishreadingcomprehensiveabilityconsistsofvocabulary,grammar,culturalknowledgeandreadingskills.Accordingtomyquestionnaire,however,almost80%studentswhoansweredtoitarefarfromsatisfiedwiththeirreadingjob.Toseewhy,Itookamoredetailedquestionnaire.FinallyIgotthereasons.
1.Severelackofvocabularies

Oneofreasonsforvocabularyobstaclesisthatwepaylittleattentiontovocabularyaccumulation.Therangeofvocabularyisjustsonarrow.Secondmanyofusjustmasteronewordandonemeaning.Sowhentheymeetpolysemy,theyfeelconfused.Moreover,somestudentswouldskipthewordsthattheydonotknow.Ortheywouldcountondictionaryore-dictionary,whicheitherwasteslotsoftimeorthemeaningtheygetdoesn’tnecessarilymeettheoneinthecontext.Itisthemainobstacleforstudentstoenhancetheirreadingability.

3.shortcomingsinbackgroundKnowledge
Asweallknow,thedifferencesoftheareaofnationallife,surroundings,socialsystemandcivilizationleadtothediversityofeverynation’sthinkingstyle,languagehabitandbehavior.Becauseofthis,eachnationhavebigdifficultyincommutating.ThoughastudentabroadlearnsalotofEnglishlanguage,hewouldfeelhardtohandlethecultureshock.Thatisbecauseheknowslittleaboutthecultureabroad.Thisgivesusalessonthatwehavetolearntheculturewellinlanguagestudying.Inmysurveys,56%studentshavesuchappearancethattheyknowallthewordsinaparagraph,butstilldonotunderstandthehiddenmeaningofit.83%studentsbeinglackofculturalbackgroundinformationofBritain&Americahavepoorunderstandingonreading,whichcausesreadingdisabilities.Let’stake“face”forexample.

ⅢSomeSuggestionstoovercometheobstaclesinreading
Readingisakindofconstructivethinkingprocess.Itnotonlyincludestheunderstandingoftheliteralmeaning,butalsoincludestheunderstandingoftheimplicitsemantics.Readingabilitycontainsanalysis,evaluationandimagination.Itisessentialtostrengthenstudents’readingstrategyInordertoadapttotheneedsofforeignlanguagelearning.Basedontheabovedyslexiaintheanalysis,andthepracticeteaching,thefollowingcaneliminatethoseobstacles.Inordertoeffectivelyimprovestudent'sreadingability,collegeEnglishteachersshouldfindsomepertinentcountermeasuresintheordinaryEnglishteachingimplementation.
