HuashanislocatedintheQinlingMountainRange,whichliesinsouthernShaanxiprovince.
Huashan(Huameansbrilliant,Chinese,orflowery;shanmeansmountain)isoneofthefivesacredTaoistmountainsinChina.Huashanboastsalotofreligioussites:
Taoisttemples,pavilions,andengravedscripturesarescatteredoverthemountain.
HuaMountainiswell-knownforitssheercliffsandplungingravines.Itisknownas"themostprecipitousmountainunderheaven"andisprobablythemostdangerousmountainintheworldfrequentedbyhikers.
HuaMountainislocated120kilometerseastofXi'an,about3hoursfromthecitycentre.Therearefivepeaksthatmakeupthemountain:
CloudTerracePeak(NorthPeak,1613m),JadeMaidenPeak(MiddlePeak,2042m),SunrisePeak(EastPeak,2100m),LotusPeak(WestPeak,2038m)andLandingWildGoosePeak(SouthPeak,2160m)。
NorthPeak,thelowestofthefive,isthestartingpoint.Ithasthreewaysupit:
thesixkilometerwindingtrackfromHuashanvillage,thecablecarorthepathbeneathit.
NextontherouteisJadeMaidenPeak.Legendhasitthatajademaidenwasonceseenridingawhitehorseamongthemountains,hencethename.ThehikerscanchoosetotakealefttoSunrisePeak,afineplacetoenjoytheviewofthesunriseinearlymorning(whichwouldinvolveclimbingthemountaininthedarkasthereisnowheretostayonthemountain)。
AlternativelyvisitorscouldtakearighttoLotusPeak.HuashanmeansFlowerMountain,anditgotthenamefromLotusPeak,whichresemblesabeautifullybloominglotusflower.FinallythereisagondolawhichtakesvisitorsacroasteepvalleytoLandingWildGoosePeak,thehighestamongthefivesummits.Thepathtothesummitischaracterizedbysteeprockfaces,withobstaclesincludingafoot-wideplankwalkwayfixedtoasheerrockfacewithonlyachainalongtherockforsupport.Theroutecontinueswithfootholdsintherockandachainforholding.Thisisfollowedbyaverticalladderinacleftintherock.Finallytherearesteepstonesteps.TheSouthPeakisnotforthefaintofheartandisparticularlydangerousinwinterweather.However,theviewsarebreathtaking.Theclimbtoitssummitmakesitclearhowtheimpenetrablemountainrepelledattackersoverthecenturies.
AsearlyasthesecondcenturyBCE,therewasaDaoisttempleknownastheShrineoftheWesternPeaklocatedatitsbase.Daoistsbelievedthatinthemountainlivesagodoftheunderworld.Thetempleatthefootofthemountainwasoftenusedforspiritsmediumstocontactthegodandhisunderlings.UnlikeTaishan,()whichbecameapopularplaceofpilgrimage,Huashanonlyreceivedlocalpilgrms,andwasnotwellknowninmuchoftherestofChina.Huashanwasalsoanimportantplaceforimmortalityseekers,aspowerfuldrugswerereputedtobefoundthere.KouQianzhi(365-448),thefounderoftheNorthernCelestialMastersreceivedrevelationsthere,asdidChenTuan(920-989),wholivedonthemountainpriortoreceivingimmortality.Inthe1230s,allthetemplesonthemountaincameundercontroloftheDaoistQuanzhenSchool.In1998,themanagementcommitteeofHuashanagreedtoturnovermostofthemountain'stemplestotheChinaDaoistAssociation.Thiswasdonetohelpprotecttheenvironment,asthepresenceofmonksandnunsdeterspoachersandloggers.

SituatedinHuayinCity,120kilometers(about75miles)eastfromXi'anCityofShaanxiProvince,Mt.Huashanisknownas'TheNumberOnePrecipitousMountainunderHeaven'.ItisoneofthefivesacredmountainsinChina.TheotherfourmountainsareMt.TaishaninShandong,Mt.HengshaninHunan,Mt.HengshaninShanxi,andMt.SongshaninHenan.
Inancienttimes,Mt.HuashanwascalledMt.Taihuashan.Fromadistancethefivepeaksseemtoformtheshapeofa'flower'(huainChinese),hencethename'Huashan'.Itisfamousforitsnaturalvistasofsteepandnarrowpaths,precipitouscrags,andahighmountainrange.ItishometoseveralinfluentialTaoisttempleswhereemperorsofpastdynastiesmadepilgrimages,makingMt.HuashantheholylandofTaoism.
YuquanYuan(JadeSpringTemple)
UsuallytouristsclimbupthemountainassistedbytheironchainsalongthewayandstarttheirtourfromYuquanYuan(JadeSpringTemple),oneofthemainTaoisttemplesinChinalocatedatthefootofMt.Huashan.IthasthearchitecturalstyleoftheclassicalgardensinsouthChina.Thereisapondinthecenterandseveralpavilionsaroundit.WalkingthroughtheWuyouPavilion,theLongCorridorofSeventy-twoWindowscomesintoview,andafterwardsQingkePingwhereabigrockcalled'HuixinRock'canbeseen.Itissaidthat'HuixinRock'isareminderforthosewhowishtostoptheirtouratthispoint.Besidetherockaretheprecipitous370rockstepscalled'QianchiZhuang'consideredtobetheprimarybreath-takingpathofMt.Huashan.Whenclimbing,onlyagleamofskyabovecanbeseen,makingclimbersfeelasiftheywereatthebottomofawell.
NorthPeak(CloudTerracePeak)
Acrossthe'QianchiZhuang'aretwosimilarprecipitouspaths-respectivelycalled'BaichiXia'and'LaojunLi'abovewhichclimbersreachMt.Huashan'sNorthPeak.ThereareprecipitouscliffsonallsidesofNorthPeak,makingitlooklikeaflatterraceintheclouds,hencethenameCloudTerracePeak.Itis1,614meters(about5,295feet)high.Threesidesarecliffsandonesideistothe'Ca'er(theearrubbingthecliff)Cliff'whichisthefourthprecipitouspathwheretouristscanclimbuponlybypressinganearclosetothecliff.InthewaistofNorthPeaktreesareluxuriantlygreen,creatingagoodrestspot.
JinsuoGuan(GoldLockPass)
Whenclimbingoverthe'BlueDragonRange',regardedasthemust-passwaytotheotherfourpeaksfromNorthPeak,travelersarriveatGoldLockPass.Mt.Huashanvisitorsknowthatitiscustomarytobuyagoldenlock,andthenlockitintheironchainsonbothsidesoftheGoldLockPassforfamiliesandfriendstoprayfortheirsafetyandhealth.Itisamarvelousspectacletoseethousandsofgoldenlocksintheironchains.WithinthemountaingateofGoldLockPass,ahugegoldenlockofabout4meters(aboutyards)longand1.5meters(aboutyards)highstandsinabigrock.Itismadeofpurecopperandforgedby9,999locksleftbyvisitors.Itisapopularphotosite.Thishugelockcanonlybeopenedbythrowingcoins-onecoinrepresentthestatusofanordinaryperson;threecoins,ablessedpersonandninecoinsamostblessedone.GoldLockPassisthethroattoMiddlePeak,EastPeak,SouthPeakandWestPeak.
MiddlePeak(JadeMaidenPeak)
MiddlePeakclingstoEastpeakandisinthecenterofEast,SouthandWestPeaks.ThereisaTaoisttempleinthepeaknamed'JadeMaidenTemple'.LegendhasitthatthedaughterofQinMugong(569-621)lovedamanwhowasgoodatplayingChinesetung-hsiao(verticalflute)andshegaveuptheroyallifetobecomeahermitwhocultivatedherspiritualityhere,hencethenameJadeMaidenPeak.TodayJadeMaidenTempleandJadeMaidenBasinforShampooingcanbefoundonthepeak.
OtherscenicspotsinMiddlePeakincludeRootlessTreeandSacrificingTreewhichhavebeautifulstoriesandaddtothesupernaturalatmosphereofMiddlePeak.
EastPeak(FacingSunPeak)
Tourguidesmaypromoteclimbingthemountainatnighttoseethesunrise.ClimbingtothetopofEastPeakrequires4to6hours.EastPeakhasanaltitudeof2,090meters(about6,857feet)formingaplatformforvisitorstoviewthesunrise.Anastronomicaltelescopeisprovidedhere.Thereferencetimeforsunriseandsunsetis5:

Onewell-knownscenicspotcalledthe'Immortal'sPalmPeakofMt.Huashanwhichisrankedasoneofthe'EightScenicWondersoftheGuanzhongArea(theplainareainthemiddleofShaanxiProvince)'islocatedonEastPeak.Itreferstothenaturalrockveinsofthecliffwhichlooklikeagiantpalm-print.LegendhasitthatonMarch3rdoftheLunarCalendaratorrentialflooderupted,destroyingthevillageswithintheMt.Huashanarea.ThisdisasterwascausedbytheQueenMotheroftheWest,whoheldher'FlatPeachCarnival'celebrationthatyear.Shecarelesslyspilledalittlejadewinedownfromparadise,causingaseriousfloodbelow.ThisnewswasquicklyreportedbyDeityShaohaototheJadeEmperorinCelestialParadise.HegaveapromptordertoDeityJulingtogodowntotametheflood.WhenDeityJuling,fullofvigorandvitality,descendedfromtheclouds,hearrivedattheprecipitouscliffofEastPeak.Atthemomentthathelaidhislefthandononesideandhisrightlegontheother,herippedthemountainintotwohalvesandimmediatelyafloodrushedout.ThistaleaddslustertoEastPeak.
