Onceuponatimetherewasapeasantwhohadmoneyandlandenough,butasrichashewas,therewasstillsomethingmissingfromhishappiness:
Hehadnochildrenwithhiswife.Oftenwhenhewenttothecitywiththeotherpeasants,theywouldmockhimandaskhimwhyhehadnochildren.Hefinallybecameangry,andwhenhereturnedhome,hesaid,"Iwillhaveachild,evenifitisahedgehog."
Thenhiswifehadababy,andthetophalfwasahedgehogandthebottomhalfaboy.Whenshesawthebaby,shewashorrifiedandsaid,"Nowseewhatyouhavewisheduponus!

Themansaid,"Itcannotbehelped.Theboymustbebaptized,butwecannotaskanyonetobehisgodfather."
Thewomansaid,"AndtheonlynamethatwecangivehimisHans-My-Hedgehog."
Whenhewasbaptized,thepastorsaid,"Becauseofhisquillshecannotbegivenanordinarybed."Sotheyputalittlestrawbehindthestoveandlaidhiminit.Andhecouldnotdrinkfromhismother,forhewouldhavestuckherwithhisquills.Helaytherebehindthestoveforeightyears,andhisfathergrewtiredofhim,andthought,"ifonlyhewoulddie."Buthedidnotdie,butjustlaythere.
Nowithappenedthattherewasafairinthecity,andthepeasantwantedtogo.Heaskedhiswifewhatheshouldbringher.
"Alittlemeat,somebreadrolls,andthingsforthehousehold,"shesaid.Thenheaskedtheservantgirl,andshewantedapairofslippersandsomefancystockings.
Finally,healsosaid,"Hans-My-Hedgehog,whatwouldyoulike?

"Father,"hesaid,"bringmesomebagpipes."
Whenthepeasantreturnedhomehegavehiswifewhathehadbroughtforher,meatandbreadrolls.Thenhegavetheservantgirltheslippersandfancystockings.AndfinallyhewentbehindthestoveandgaveHans-My-Hedgehogthebagpipes.
WhenHans-My-Hedgehoghadthem,hesaid,"Father,gototheblacksmith'sandhavemycock-roostershod,thenIwillrideawayandneveragaincomeback."Thefatherwashappytogetridofhim,sohehadhisroostershod,andwhenitwasdone,Hans-My-Hedgehogclimbedonitandrodeaway.Hetookpigsanddonkeyswithhim,totendintheforest.
Intheforesttheroosterflewintoatalltreewithhim.Therehesatandwatchedoverthedonkeysandthepigs.Hesatthereforyears,untilfinallytheherdhadgrownlarge.Hisfatherknewnothingabouthim.Whilesittinginthetree,heplayedhisbagpipesandmadebeautifulmusic.
Onedayakingcameby.Hewaslostandheardthemusic.Hewasamazedtohearit,andsentaservanttolookaroundandseewhereitwascomingfrom.Helookedhereandtherebutonlysawalittleanimalsittinghighinatree.Itlookedlikearoosteruptherewithahedgehogsittingonitmakingthemusic.
Thekingsaidtotheservantthatheshouldaskhimwhyhewassittingthere,andifheknewthewaybacktohiskingdom.ThenHans-My-Hedgehogclimbeddownfromthetreeandtoldhimthathewouldshowhimthewayifthekingwouldpromiseinwritingtogivehimthefirstthingthatgreetedhimattheroyalcourtuponhisarrivalhome.
Thekingthought,"Icandothateasilyenough.Hans-My-Hedgehogcannotunderstandwriting,andIcanputdownwhatIwantto."
Thenthekingtookpenandinkandwrotesomething,andafterhehaddoneso,Hans-My-Hedgehogshowedhimtheway,andhearrivedsafelyathome.Hisdaughtersawhimcomingfromafar,andwassooverjoyedthatsherantomeethimandkissedhim.HethoughtaboutHans-My-Hedgehogandtoldherwhathadhappened,thathewassupposedtohavepromisedthefirstthingthatgreetedhimtoastrangeanimalthatrodearoosterandmadebeautifulmusic.Butinsteadhehadwrittenthatthiswouldnothappen,forHans-My-Hedgehogcouldnotread.Theprincesswashappyaboutthis,andsaidthatitwasagoodthing,forshewouldnothavegonewithhiminanyevent.

ThekingsaidyesandsignedapromisetoHans-My-Hedgehog.
Whenthatwasdone,Hans-My-Hedgehogrodeaheadonhisroostershowingthemtheway,andthekingsafelyreachedhiskingdom.Whenthekingarrivedathiscourttherewasgreatjoy.Nowhehadanonlydaughterwhowasverybeautiful.Sheranouttohim,threwherarmsaroundhisneckandkissedhim,andwaseversohappythatheroldfatherhadreturned.

Butshepromisedthatshewouldgowithhimwhenhecame,fortheloveofheroldfather.
Hans-My-Hedgehogtendedhispigs,andthepigshadmorepigs,untilthereweresomanythatthewholeforestwasfull.ThenHans-My-Hedgehoglethisfatherknowthattheyshouldemptyoutallthestallsinthevillage,becausehewascomingwithsuchalargeherdofpigsthateveryonewhowantedtowouldbeabletotakepartintheslaughter.

Whentheclocktruckeleven,hewentintothebedroom,tookoffthehedgehogskin,andlaiditdownbythebed.Themenrushedin,grabbedit,andthrewitintothefire,andassoonasthefireconsumedit,hewasredeemed,andhelaythereinbedentirelyintheshapeofahuman.Buthewasasblackascoal,asthoughhehadbeencharred.Thekingsentforhisphysician,whowashedhimwithgoodsalvesandbalms.Thenhebecamewhiteandwasahandsomeyounggentleman.
Whentheprincesssawwhathadhappened,shewasoverjoyed,andtheygotupandateanddrank.Nowtheirweddingwascelebratedforreal,andHans-My-Hedgehoginheritedtheoldking'skingdom.
