AbstractUsingGIS,GPSandGPRS,anintelligentmonitoringanddispatchsystemoftrucksandshovelsinanopenpithasbeendesignedanddeveloped.Thesystemcanmonitoranddispatchopen-pittrucksandshovelsandplaybacktheirhistoricalpaths.Anintelligentdataalgorithmisproposedinapracticalapplicat-
ion.Thealgorithmcancountthetimesofdeliveriesoftrucksandloadingsofshovels.Experimentsonrealscenesshowthattheperformanceofthissystemisstableandcansatisfyproductionstandardsinopenpits.

1.Introduction
Todatethedevelopmentoftruckmonitoringdinpatchsystemsintheworld,suchastheDISPATCHmonitoringsystemoftheAmericanModuleCompanyhasreachedahighlymaturelevelandisalmostunivernal.Ithasdevelopedintoadecision-makingplatformbymanagementasacontrolsysteminmulti-direction-
alminingproduction,calledIntellimine.In1998,DISPATCHwasintroducedintotheDexingCopperMineinJiangxi,China.Ithasclearlyenhancedtheserviceefficiencyofequipment,improvedthemanagementlevelintheopenpitsandobtainedbetteroverallbenefits.In2003,theDandongDong-fangMeasurementandControlTechnologyCo.Ltd.,togetherwiththeQidashanIronMinehavedevelopedadispatchmanagementsystemfortrucksinopenpits.
Thesystemhasbecomeindispensabletodailyproductionmanagement.Itmustbeemphaticallypointedoutthatthegreatestdisadvantageofthesesystemsisthattheycosttoomuch.Themajorcauseisthatanindependentcommunicationnetworkneedstobeestablishedandmaintainedbyeveryopenpit.Manyminescannotaffordsuchasystem.However,usingGIS/GPS/GPRStechnologies,itisnotnecessarytoestablishindependentcommunicationnetworksineveryopenpit.Thenetworkcanbemaintainedandupgradedbyathirdparty(e.g.,ChinaMobileCommunicationCo.Ltd).Thiscanreducecostsconsiderablyandprovidesagoodplatformformediumandsmallopenpitminestoestablishafast,highlytive,andpracticalgroundtransportationsystem.Suchasystemisveryimportantinenhancinglaborproductivity,reduceminingcostsandpromoteminingtechnologiestoanunprecedentedlevelinopenpits.
2.GIS/GPS/GPRS
2.1GIS
TheGeographicInformationSystem(GIS)isonekindofcomputersystemgathering,storing,managing,analyzing,demonstratingandapplyinggeographic
information.Itisageneraltechnologythatcananalyzeandprocessenormous
amountsofgeographicdata.Ittakesageographicspacedatabaseasitsfoundat-
ion,usesageographicmodelanalysismethodtoprovidemanykindsofspatial
anddynamicgeographicinformationandservesasageographicresearchand
decision-makingtool.Ithassomebasicfunctionssuchaselectronicmapping,spatialdatamanagementandspatialinformationanalysis.GIShasbeenappliedinmanyfieldstoestablishallkindsofspatialdatabasesanddecisionsupportsystems,eachwithdifferentcriteriaandprovideanswerstomanydifferentformalspatialinquiries,spatialanalysesandassistanceplansanddecision-makingfunc-
tions.
Todate,GIShaspits.Thetaskbeengraduallyappliedinopenofamonitoringdispatchinformationsystemoftrucksandshovelsinopenpitsistotrack,monitorandmanageproductionequipment,whichdependslargelyongeographicspatialinformation.ThereforeGISplaysanimportantroleinvisualsupervisorysystemsoftrucks,real-timedynamicmanagementandassistanceindecisionanalysis.
2.2GPS
TheGlobalPositioningSystem(GPS)isasatellite-basednavigationsystemmadeupofanetworkof24satellitesplacedinorbit.Theirgroundstationsare
managedbytheU.S.DepartmentofDefense.
AGPSreceivermustbelockedontothesignalofatleastthreesatellitestocalculatea2Dposition(latitudeandlongitude)andtrackmovements.Withfour
ormoresatellitesinview,thereceivercandeterminethe3Dpositionoftrucks(latitude,longitudeandelevation).Oncethepositionofthetruckhasbeendete-
rmined,theGPSunitcancalculateotherinformation,suchasspeed,bearing,track,tripdistance,supriseandsunsettimeandmore.GPSworksinallweatherconditions,anywhereintheworld,24hoursaday.TherearenosubscriptionfeesorestablishmentchargestouseGPS.
Todate,asGPSunitsarebecomingsmallerandlessexpensive,thereareanexpandingnumberofapplicationsforGPSinopenpits.WithGPS,themonitor-
ingdispatchinformationsystemoftrucksandshovelsinopenpitsprovidescua-
ccurateposition(latitudeandlongitude),speed,bearing,time,trackandmorebasicinformationoftrucksandshovels.
