Act1
TheplayopensonasummerafternooninthegardenofHindheadView,acottagesouthofSurrey,England.Twenty-two-year-oldVivieWarrenliesinahammock,readingandmakingnotes,untilsheisinterruptedbyMr.Praed,amiddle-agedgentlemanwhoishermother'sfriend.Duringtheiropeningconversation,Vivierevealshernegativeattitudetowardtraditionalwomen'sroles.Praedappreciatesherunconventionalityuntilsheadmitsthatshehasnointerestinromanceandbeauty,whichshockshisstrongaestheticsensibility.WhenVivieasksPraedwhetherhethinksshewillgetalongwithhermother,withwhomshehasspentlittletime,hesuggeststhatMrs.Warrenmaybedisappointedinherunconventionality.Vivieadmitsthatsheknowslittleabouthermother'slife,whichclearlyembarrassesPraedashestrugglestofindanappropriatedescriptionofher.ViviebeginstogrowsuspiciousabouthermotherasshenotesPraed'sunease.

AfterCroftsentersthecottage,PraedishailedbyFrankGardner,thesonofthelocalrector,whoadmitsthatheisstayingwithhisfatherafterrunningupconsiderabledebts.HetellsPraedthathehasbeenspendingtimewithVivie,whomheconsidersa"jollygirl."BeforeFrankcantellPraedhowserioushisaffectionisforVivie,hisfatherappearsandPraedgoesintotea.Whenthetwoareleftalone,FrankrevealshisfeelingstowardVivietohisfather,whosubsequentlycriticizeshersocialposition.AfterthereverendnotesFrank'sextravagantlifestyle,hissonremindshimofanincidentinhisfather'spastwhenheofferedawomanmoneytoretrievelettershehadwrittentoher.Alarmedthatsomeonemighthear,thereverendbegsFranktodropthematter.Whenthetwojointheothersfortea,Mrs.Warrenexclaimsinfrontofthemallthatshestillhasthelettersthereverendhaswrittentoher,whichleaveshim"miserablyconfused."

ThateveningFrankflirtswithMrs.Warren,insistingthatshecometoViennawithhim.Shegentlyrebuffshimbutthengiveshimakiss.Angrywithherself,shetellshimtoturnhisattentionstoVivie.However,whenFrankadmitsthathehas,sheisoutrageduntilheinsiststhathisintentionsarehonorable.Later,whenMrs.WarrenconsidersthepossibilityofVivieandFrank'sunion,thereverenddeemsit"impossible."HisavoidanceofanyexplanationsuggeststhathethinksthathemightbeVivie'sfather.Beforethematterissettled,CroftsdeclaresthatViviecannotmarryFrank,becauseheispenniless.Mrs.WarrenoverridesFrank'sproteststhatViviewillmarryforlove,notmoney,bydeclaring,"ifyouhavenomeansofkeepingawife…youcan'thave[her]."Undeterred,FrankdeterminestoaskVivietomarryhimimmediately.
Atthatmoment,VivieandPraedenterthecottage,andthediscussionisdropped.Aftertheothersgointodinner,FrankandViviestaybehind,yetFrankdoesnotbringupthesubjectofmarriage.Viviecondemns"wasters"likeCrofts,"shiftingalongfromonemealtoanotherwithnopurpose,andnocharacter,andnogrit,"anddeterminesthatshewillneverenduplikehim.WhenFrankadmitsthatCroft'sabilitytogetbywithoutemploymentisappealing,Viviecutshimshort,exclaimingthatheisgetting"tiresome."
Later,whenCroftsrevealshisinterestinVivie,Mrs.Warrenadoptsaprotective,motherlytoneandinsiststhatheisnotgoodenoughforher.Croftsignoresherinsultandpressesher,arguingthatthethreeofthemcouldlivetogether"quitecomfortably."Hethenattemptstobuyherapproval,butsheangrilyrefuses.Enraged,Croftsrunsoutwhenhehearstheotherscomein.
Praed,Crofts,andFrankdepartfortheGardnerhometoretirefortheevening,leavingMrs.Warrenalonewithherdaughter.ThetwosoongetintoanargumentabouthowViviewillnowlive.WhenMrs.Warreninsiststhatshehastherighttodetermineherdaughter'sfuture,Vivieadmitsthatsheknowsnothingabouthermotherandbeginstoquizher.Mrs.Warrenbecomesquiteflustered,especiallywhenViviedemandstoknowwhoherfatheris.SuspectingthatherfathermightbeCrofts,Viviedeclaresthatshewillleavethenextdayunlesshermothertellsherthetruth.Mrs.WarrenexplainsthatCroftsisnotherfatherandrevealsthatsheisnotsurewhois.
Viviehandlesthenewsofhermother'spromiscuitydispassionately.Unabletogainsympathyfromherdaughter,Mrs.Warrenbecomesincreasinglyagitateduntilsherevertstohernatural,colloquialtongueandberatesVivieforherlackofunderstanding.Sheinsiststhatshehadnochoicebuttoliveasshehad,forshedidnothavetheadvantagesthatshehasprovidedforVivie.WhenViviearguesthathermothermusthavehadsomechoiceconcerningherfuture,Mrs.Warrentellsherthedetailsofherdifficultlifegrowingupinpoverty,arguingthatprostitutionwastheonlywaysheandhersistercouldsurvive.Sheexplainsthatthe"high-class,"profitablebrothelinBrussels,whichsheandhersisterran,affordedthemameasureofindependenceinaworldwherewomen'sliveswerecontrolledbymen.

Inthereverend'sgardenthenextmorning,Frankchideshisfatherfortheinebriatedstoriesof"hisfieryyouth"thathetoldlongintothepreviousevening.PraedcautionsFranktotreathisfatherwithmorerespect.Frank'struefeelingsaboutMrs.Warren'ssocialstandingthensurfaceasheadmitsthathismothermostlikelywenttotownthatmorningtoavoidhervisittotheirhome.HewarnshisfathertohidethetruthabouthisrelationshipwithMrs.WarrenanddeclareshisdisgustwhenhethinksaboutthetimeViviemustspendwithher.

FrankandViviemeetinherofficeinLondon.HetriestoconvincehertoenjoytheSaturdayafternoonatleisurewithhim,butVivietellshimthatshehastowork.WhenFrankinsiststhathedoesnotbelievesheishissisterandevenifshewere,itwouldnotalterhisromanticfeelingsforher,shetellshimthatasisterlyrelationshipistheonlytypeshewantswithhim.Frankmistakenlyassumesthatshehasfalleninlovewithsomeoneelse.
