Peoplearelesslikelytoyawn（打哈欠）whenothersdoastheygetolder,astudyhasfound.

Contagious（传染的）yawningisrelatedmorecloselytoaperson’sagethantirednessandenergylevels,US-basedscientistssaid.Researchersarenowlookingatwhethertocatchyawnsfromotherpeopleisabornability,withthehopeofhelpingtreatsomementalhealthdisorders.

DrElizabethCirulli,assistantprofessorofmedicineatDukeUniversityinDurham,NorthCarolina,ledthestudy.Shesaid,“Thisisthefirststudytolookatalargenumberoffactors.Itisthelargeststudy,whenitcomestothenumberofpeopleparticipating,tillnow.”Shesaidshedidnotknowwhycontagiousyawningreducedwithage.

DrCirulliaddedthatalthoughagewasthemostimportantpredictor（预测器）ofcontagiousyawning,only8%ofthechangeinwhetherornotaparticipantyawnedwasexplainedbytheirage.

“Mostofchangeinthecontagiousyawningreactionwasjustnotexplained,”saidDrCirulli.

RobertRProvine,professorofpsychologyattheUniversityofMarylandinBaltimoreCounty,saidthestudywas“special”asitwasthefirsttimealinkbetweenageingandcontagiousyawninghadbeenshown.ProfProvinesaidthefindingscouldhelptounderstandwhylaughingandcoughingweresocontagious.Headded,“Contagiousactssuchasyawningandlaughingremindusthatweareoftenmindlesstocontrolourbehaviour.”
