Recentresearchsuggeststhatthisviewofdomesticationisincomplete.Prehistorichumanbeingsdidcatchandbreedusefulwildanimals,butspecialistsinanimalbehaviornowthinkthatdomesticationwasnotsimplysomethingpeopledidtoanimals—theanimalsplayedanactivepartintheprocess.Wolvesandwildhorses,forexample,mayhavetakenthefirststepsintheirowndomesticationbyhangingaroundhumansettlements,feedingonpeople’scropsandgettingusedtohumanactivity.Theanimalswhichwerenottoonervousorfearfultolivenearpeopleproducedtheirbabiesthatalsotoleratedhumans,makingiteasierforpeopletocatchandbreedthem.
