Letmegiveyoutwoexamplestoillustratethepowerofwords:

Agroupoffrogsweretravelingthroughthewoods,andtwoofthemfellintoadeeppit.Alltheotherfrogsgatheredaroundthepit.Whentheysawhowdeepthepitwas,theytoldthetwofrogsthattheywereasgoodasdead.

Inthe1950s,AlanTuring,theinventorofthecomputer,challengedthecomputerindustrytocreateamachinethatwasintelligentasahumanbeing.
However,aFrenchpsychologist,AlfredBinet,dideventuallycomeupwiththefirst,genuinelyscientificmethodforobjectivelymeasuringintelligence.Itinvolvedsettingstandardverbalandnumericaltests,withthescoresmeasuredagainstanaverageof100.Binet’sIQtestswereacceptedwithoutquestionforover60years,butbythe1970s,ideasaboutintelligencewerebeginningtochange.
ProfessorHowardGardner,ProfessorRobertOrnstein,myselfandothersbecameawarethattherewereanumberofdifferentkindsofintelligence,andthateachdifferentintelligenceactedinharmonywitheachoftheotherswhentheywereproperlydeveloped.
Atrulyintelligentpersonisnotonewhocansimplyspout(滔滔不绝地讲)wordsandnumbers;itissomeonewhocanreact‘intelligently’toalltheopportunities,simulationsandproblemsprovidedbytheenvironment.
Realintelligencemeansengagingyourbrainwitheveryaspectoflife–youplaysportwithyoubrain;yourelatetoothersbrain-to-brain;youmakelovewithyourbrain.Alloflifeis,infactlived‘headfirst’!

LeonardodaVinciisregularlygivenasthebestexampleofthe‘allroundgenius’;inotherwords,astheindividualwhohasmostdramaticallydemonstratedtheuseofallhisintelligences.Leonardo’sgeniuswassogreatthatsomepeopleratehimthegreatestgeniusofalltimeinmanyoftheindividualintelligencestoo.Hewasalmostentirelyself-taught,andprovidesatremendousexampletousofjustwhatsomeonecanachievewiththedeterminationtoexpandanddevelopallofhisintelligences.
Contrarytomanyassumptions,Leonardowasnotfromawealthy,well-to-dofamily,andhisformaleducationwasverybasic.Whenhewasaboy,hewasapprenticedtoapainter/sculptor,inwhoseworkshophelearnedhiscraftofdrawingandpainting.
