forfurthertrainingandartisticstudy.Beforeheleft,hedrewaportraitofhismother
inpencilandsculptedasmallbust(半身像)ofhisfatheroutofclay.Then,22-year-old
AugustusopenedanartstudioinRomeandworkedonhisfirstlife-sizedsculpture,
calledHiawatha.Anartpatronwasimpressedwiththissculptureandpromisedtohelp
Augustus"untilyourgeniusandlaborsshallhavemetwiththerewardtowhichIfeel
theyareentitled".
In1876,AugustuswaschosentodesignamonumenttotheCivilWarheroAdmiral
DavidFarragutoftheU.S.Navy.Completedfiveyearslater,whenhewas33,his
firstmajorsculpturefortheU.S.wasunveiledatMadisonSquareinNewYorkCity,
thesculptor'sboyhoodhome.Oneartcriticcalledit"thebestmonumentofthekind
thecityhastoshow".ThenthegiantStandingLincolninLincolnPark,Chicagoina
settingbyarchitectWhite,1884-1887,wasconsideredthefinestportraitstatueinthe
U.S.
However,in1900,aged52,hisdoctorstoldhimhehadcancer.Eventhoughhe
wasoftenill,hecontinuedtoworkathishomeandstudioinCornish,NewHampshire.
In1905,PresidentTheodoreRooseveltrequestedthatAugustusredesignAmerican
coins-toconveythestrengthofthenation.Augustusmadelifelikepencilsketchesof
hiscoindesigns.Yet,AugustusdiedinAugust1907,twomonthsbeforehisl0-dollar
and20-dollargoldcoinswereissued.AugustusSaint-Gaudenshadfulfilledhisdream-
