ThenumberonemythisthattheeducationabroadexperienceisnotforBlackstudents,especiallyinthetraditionalEuropeanstudysites.TheassumptionisthatEuropeanracismissooverwhelmingthatBlackstudentswouldbebetteroffremainingintheirowncountry,wheretheyunderstandthepoliticsofracismandcanmakethenecessaryadjustments.BlackstudentswhotravelabroadareinfactshockedwhentheyaretreatedasAmericansfirstandasintelligentstudentswhohaveearnedtherighttobestudyinginthehostcountry.AfricanAmericanstudentsshouldnotfeartravelingabroadbecauseofracism.
InmyowntravelsthroughEurope,IhavefoundtheAfricancommunityineverymajorcity.IwasdelightedtofindthatothershavealreadypavedthewayforAfricanAmericanstofollow.WecanlearnmuchfromtheAfricanandCaribbeancommunitiesinLondon,Paris,Amsterdam,andbeyond.
