Atypicalexampleofthisabilityisthecaseofawomanwhoclaimsthatherintuitionpreventedeachofherfivechildrenfromseriousmishaps.OncesheawokeinthemiddleofthenightandfelttheneedtocheckonhersonPaul,whowasthreeyearsoldatthetime.Hewasn'tinhisbed,sosheraceddownthestairstofendhim.Shefoundhimoutside,sleepwalking,headedstraighttowardaflightofconcretesteps.Thenagain,therewasatimewhenoneofherdaughtersfelloffahorseandbrokeherarm.Thechildneithercriednoryelledforhelp.Butthemother,sensingthatsomethingwaswrong,cameoutofthehouseandfoundherinafieldjustminutesaftertheaccident.Howdidsheknow?

Theconceptthatpeoplearecapableofhavingasixthsenseisnotanewone.NumerousstudiesofESP(extrasensoryperception)havebeenunderwayfordecades.Whattheyhaverevealedonlysupportsthetheorythatpeoplearecapableofhavingandusinganothersensebeyondsight,sound,smell,tasteandtouch.Butnosinglegroupofpeopleseemstohavethisabilityasconsistentlyasmothersdo.Whyisthis?
Sometheorizethatthecloseandintimaterelationshipthatmotherandchildhaveforthefirstyearsofachild'slifesetsupanempathy(感情移入)thatnootherrelationshipcouldpossiblyduplicate.Inotherwords,amother"tunesin"tothethoughtsandbehaviorofherchildmorethananyotherpersoncould.Therefore,eventhoughshemaybepreoccupiedwithhouseholdchoresorsocialactivities,apartofherisconstantlyalertforherchild'ssafety.Notanunreasonabletheory--sincemostofusaretheproductofourmothers'devotion.Buthowdoesthisexplainwhyamotherwillknowthatherchildisindanger,eventhoughthechilditselfmaynotbeawareofit?
Thisisthequestionwhichhaskeptmother'sintuitionamystery.Somethingbeyondthatwhichwecanlogicallyexplainsomehowseemstowarnamotherwhenherchildapproachesdanger.
Aninterestingillustrationofthissixthsenseinvolvesthefamousescapeartist,Houdini.Asthestorygoes,Houdiniwasplanningtoperformanescapefromasteeltrunkwrappedinchainsanddroppedintoafrozenriver.Becausetheriverwassocold,he'donlyhaveafewminutestoescapeinordertosurvive.TheywrappedHoudiniinastraightjacket,lockedhimintothetrunk,securedthechains,andthendroppedhimintotheriverthroughaholecutintotheice.MinutespassedandHoudinididnotappear.WhenenoughtimehadpassedtomakeitapparentthatHoudini'sescapehadfailed,thegrief-strickenpartyleftthesceneandreportedthatHoudinihaddied.Onefriendremainedattheholeintheice,notyetconvincedthatHoudinihaddrowned.Tohisutteramazement,Houdinididindeedsurfaceatthespot.
Whenthehalf-frozenartisthadrecoveredenough,hetoldhisfriendthathehadnotaccountedforthecurrentoftheriverundertheice.Theriverhadcarriedthetrunkdownstreamandwhenhegotoutofthetrunk,hecouldn'tfindtheholecutintotheice.Hemanagedtogetoxygenfromairpocketscaughtbetweentheiceandthewater,buthehadnowayoffindingtheholethroughthethickice.Thenheheardhismother'svoicecallinghim.Hefollowedhervoice,anditledhimtotheholeintheicewherehisfriendwaswaiting.
Thiswasamazing,first,becausehismotherlivedinanothercityandwasnowherenearthesceneofthefrozenriver.Butmoreamazingthanthatwasthefactthat,whenHoudinitriedtocallhismother,hewasinformedthatshehaddiedjusthoursbefore.

Howhadshebeenabletoprotectherchildinspiteofthefactthatshewasnolongerliving?
