secretaryofcommerce;thesecretaryofagriculture;thechairmanofour

councilofeconomicadvisors;senatorsasser,ourambassador;thenational

securityadvisorandmychiefofstaff,amongothers.isaythattoillustrate

theimportancethattheunitedstatesplacesonourrelationshipwithchina.

iwouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents,thefaculty,

theadministrators,oncelebratingthecentennialyearofyouruniversity.

whichwasfoundedbyamericanmissionaries.manyofitswonderfulbuildings

weredesignedbyanamericanarchitect.thousandsofamericansstudentsand

professorshavecomeheretostudyandteach.wefeelaspecialkinshipwith

you.iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportant

respectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.injuneof1919,the

firstpresidentofyenchinguniversity,johnleightonstuart,wassetto

delivertheveryfirstcommencementaddressontheseverygrounds.atthe

appointedhour,heappeared,butnostudentsappeared.theywereallout

leadingthemay4thmovementforchina'spoliticalandculturalrenewal.when

ireadthis,ihopedthatwheniwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,someone

overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan20,000

students.yourgraduatesarespreadthroughoutchinaandaroundtheworld.you

havebuiltthelargestuniversitylibraryinallofasia.lastyear,20

percentofyourgraduateswentabroadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmath

andsciencemajors.andinthisanniversaryyear,morethanamillionpeople

inchina,asia,andbeyondhaveloggedontoyourwebsite.atthedawnofa

newcentury,thisuniversityisleadingchinaintothefuture.icomeheretodaytotalktoyou,thenextgenerationofchina'sleaders,

aboutthecriticalimportancetoyourfutureofbuildingastrongpartnership

betweenchinaandtheunitedstates.

morelearninginasia,africa,europe,andlatinamerica.

fromaclosedcommandeconomicsystemtoadriving,increasinglymarket-based

anddriveneconomy,generatingtwodecadesofunprecedentedgrowth,giving

peoplegreaterfreedomtotravelwithinandoutsidechina,tovoteinvillage

elections,toownahome,chooseajob,attendabetterschool.asaresult

youhaveliftedliterallyhundredsofmillionsofpeoplefrompoverty.per

capitaincomehasmorethandoubledinthelastdecade.mostchinesepeople

areleadinglivestheycouldnothaveimaginedjust20yearsago.

deforestationtoacidrainandwatershortage.

inthefaceofthesechallengesnewsystemsoftrainingandsocialsecurity

willhavetobedevised,andnewenvironmentalpoliciesandtechnologieswill

havetobeintroducedwiththegoalofgrowingyoureconomywhileimproving
