Ⅲ.TypesoftheJobInterview
Ajobinterviewisaprocessinwhichapotentialemployeeisevaluatedbyanemployerforprospectiveemploymentinafirm.Aftertheinterview,theinterviewerwilldeterminewhetheranapplicantissuitablefortheposition.
Theremaybedifferentinterviewsduringajobsearch.It’simportantthatthecandidatesunderstandthepurposeofeach.Threeverycommontypesofinterviewsaretelephonescreeninginterview,in-personscreeninginterviewandselectioninterview.Othertypesofinterviewsarealsocoveredhere.Nomatterwhichtypeofinterview,thecandidates’goalistopresenttheirqualificationtothedecisionmakers(thepeoplewhomakethedecisiontohireornot).Noteveryonethecandidatesshouldtreateachpersonasthoughtheyhavetheauthoritytohirethem(fromtheparkingattention,tothesecretary,totheCEO)
1.TelephoneScreeningInterview.Thisinterviewsavestheemployertimebyeliminatingcandidatesbasedonessentialcriteriasuchasparticularjobrequirements,educationorrequiredskills.
Itisagoodideatohaveaparticularplaceinyourhomeforyourdocuments.Keepyourresumeinviewandrefertoitasneeded.
2.In-personScreeningInterview.Thisinterviewisusedtoverifythecandidate’squalificationsforthepositionandtoestablishapreliminaryimpressionofthecandidate’sattitude,interestandprofessionalstyle.Aprofessionalscreenerfromtheemployer’sHumanResourcesDepartmentusuallyconductstheinterview.Atthisstage,thegoalistoselectthemostsuitablecandidateswhowillmeetthedecisionmakers.
3.SelectionInterview.Conductedbythedecisionmaker,thepurposeofthisinterviewistoprobethecandidate’squalificationsandtoassessthecomfortlevelwithwhichthecandidatemightestablishworkingrelationships.Theremaybemorethanoneinterviewatthisstage.Asthenumberofcandidatesiswhittleddown,acandidatemaybeinvitedbacktospeakwiththesamepersonand/orwithothermanagersormembersoftheworkgroup.Thecandidate’sabilitytoestablishrapportandpresentyourselfastherightpersonforthepositioniscritical.
4.WorkSampleInterview.Thisinterviewisdonetoallowtheapplicantanopportunityto“showtheirwares”.Itcouldbeatime
foragraphicartisttodisplayhis/herportfolio.Asalespersonmaybeaskedtomakeasalespresentation.Anofficeworkermaybeaskedtocompleteabusinessletterusingaspecifictypeofcomputersoftwareprogram.
5.PeerGroupInterview.Thisinterviewisanopportunitytomeetandtalkwithprospectivecoworkers.Justasinotherinterviews,thepeergroupwillbeevaluatingthecandidate,determininghowhewouldfitin.
6.GroupInterview.Sometimesreferredtoasapanelinterview,itusuallyconsistsofthreeormorepeople,allaskingquestions.Directyouranswertotheindividualaskingthequestion,buttrytomaintainsomeeyecontactwiththeothermembersofthegroup.Don’tforgettosmile.Itshowsconfidence.
7.LuncheonInterview.“TheMeal”----Thistypeofinterviewassesseshowwellacandidatecanhandlehimselfinasocialsituation.EmployerrepresentativesmayincludetheRecruitmentManager,apersonfromtheHumanResourceDepartmentandoneormorepeergroupemployees.Mealsshouldbechosencarefully.Aspillonablouseortieisn’tlikelytomakeafavorableimpression.Selecthealthyandeasythingstoeatsoyoucananswerquestionsandpayattentiontotheconversation.
8.StressInterview.Astressinterviewintroducesyounottoaninterviewer,buttoan“interrogator”.Theinterviewisoneinwhichthecandidateistreatedasthoughheistheenemy.Theinterrogatorasksanumberofoffensivequestionsthataredesignedtodeliberatelycausediscomfort.Keepcool,taketimeinrespondingtothequestions,andwhenit’sallover,rewardyourself.Don’ttakeitpersonally.Thisisusuallyatestofhowyouwillhandlestressonthejob.
9.VideoconferenceInterview.Someemployerstodayusevideoconferencetoconductmeetingsorcarryoutotheraspectsoftheirbusiness.Conductinganinterviewviavideoconferenceenableanemployertosavetravelcostsandstillhave,ineffect,aperson-to-personinterview.Ifthethoughtoffacingacameraduringaninterviewfrightenyou,practicebeforeavideocameraoramirror.
