Theexpertdoesn’tbelievethegrizzly’swhitefurisacaseof albinism, adisorderinwhichananimalfailstoproduce melanin,whichisresponsibleforskin,hair,andeyecolor.Instead,hethinksthebear’sunusualcoloringistheresultofa recessive (隐性)gene(基因),thecharacteristicsofwhichareoftencoveredbythoseofdominantgenes.However,ifbothparentscarrythesamerecessivegene—inthiscase,onethatresultsinwhitefur—itcanbepassedontolatergenerations.
Thoughthisisthefirsttimetheworldhasseenthewhitegrizzly,parkofficials,whohaveknownofNakoda’s existence since2018,never publicized theuniquebearduetofearthatitwouldbe heartlessly runafterbyfanseagertoseetheseunusual-lookinganimals.
Asitturnsout,theywereright.Nakoda’sphotosandvideos,whichhavegone viral,haveledtocrowdsofpeoplerushingtothebear’scurrentlocation,resultinginunsafeparkingandtrafficjams.Theconcernedofficials enforced a10-kilometerno-stoppingzone,whichtheyhopewillinformvisitorstotravelthroughtheareasafelyandtopreventthesebearsfromgettinghitonthehighway.
