DiscreteMathematicsInternationalJournalofManMachineStudies
Thedynamicalbehaviourofstructurescanbemodelledandsimulatedsatisfactorilyinthelinearandslightlynonlinearrangesusingfiniteelementsandotheranalyticalmodelsinconjunctionwithmoderncomputers.However,thehighlynonlinearbehaviourofstructuresremainstobestudiedfurther.Thenonlinearresponseofcomplexstructureswhichhavebeendamagedbystrong-motionearthquakesliesinthisarea.Itisextremelydifficulttocollectsufficientfieldorlaboratorydatafortheconstructionofaccuratemathematicalmodelsofsuchstructuresforpracticalapplications.Thisispartlyduetothefactthatthefailurebehaviourofagivenstructureishighlyload-historydependent.Intheabsenceofreliableanalyticaltools,systemidentificationtechniquesmayoccasionallybeappliedtoverifyand/orupdatethemathematicalmodelofastructure.Thedevelopmentofmathematicalmodelsusefulforanalysisofstructuralbehaviourtoearthquakeexcitationisanareatoolargetobecoveredindetailbyasinglereview.Inthispaper,anattemptismadetocriticallyreviewavailablemathematicalmodelsintherandomearthquakeresponseanalysisofstructures.Byrandom,werefertotheexcitation,tothepropertiesofthestructureitself,ortoboth.Weareespeciallyinterestedinthosemodelsdealingwithslightlytohighlynonlinearbehaviour.Somerecentworkwhichutilizestheseanalyticaltechniquesishighlighted.Alsoincludedisareviewofsystemidentificationtechniquesasappliedtostructures.Theconceptofdamageaccumulationismentioned,andadamageindexisdiscussedwhichmaybeusedinconjunctionwithananalyticalmodel.Aselectivebibliographyisalsogivenforamorecompleteintroductionintotheareasdiscussedherein.

Wepresenttwoextensionsofthelinearbound,duetoMarcusandTardos,onthenumberof1-entriesinann×n(0,1)-matrixavoidingafixedpermutationmatrix.Wefirstextendthelinearboundtohypergraphswithorderedvertexsetsand,usingpreviousresultsofKlazar,weproveanexponentialboundonthenumberofhypergraphsonnverticeswhichavoidafixedpermutation.This,inturn,solvesvariousconjecturesofKlazaraswellasaconjectureofBrändénandMansour.WethenextendtheoriginalFüredi–Hajnalproblemfromordinarymatricestod-dimensionalmatricesandshowthatthenumberof1-entriesinad-dimensional(0,1)-matrixwithsidelengthnwhichavoidsad-dimensionalpermutationmatrixisO(nd−1).

HowB2BfirmsinthePeople'sRepublicofChina[PRC]view,valueandmanagetheircorporatereputationhasreceivedlittleresearchattention.Drawingonmultiplecasestudies,ourfindingsconfirmthatfirmsareutilizingcertainWesternconceptualizationsofcorporatereputation,includingtheleveragingofintangibleformsofcorporatereputation.However,manyofthefirmswerealsousingthehithertounderemphasizedelementsoffirm–governmentrelationshipsandgovernmentregulatorypoliciestocreatepositiveassessmentsofafirm'sreputationamongkeystakeholders.NotwithstandingourfindingsthatcorporatereputationisvaluedasameansofgainingcompetitiveadvantageanddispellingperceptionsthatChineseproducts/servicesarelow-costandlow-quality,concernremainsthatbuildingreputationcapitalamongstakeholdersmayresultinalossofpricecompetitiveness.Finally,unliketheframeworkproposedbyBarnett,Jermier,andLafferty(2006),ourresultssuggestthatB2BfirmsinChinadonotimposeclearboundariesbetweenreputationand‘corporatereputationcapital’.Nordoesthereappeartobeanemphasisondisaggregatingtheconstructsofidentifyandimagefromthatofreputation.
