OnJan.13,1982oneoftheworstsnowstormsinthehistoryofWashington,.hitthecity.Justabouteverythingcloseddown—thegovernment,businesses,schools,theairports.Byaboutnoon,theskiesclearedandWashington’sNationalAirportreopenedforbusiness.ThecrewofAirFloridaFlight90beganpreparingforanonstoptriptosunnyFortLauderdale,Florida.At3:
59.,thetwin-engineBoeing737wasclearedfortakeoffandbeganrumblingdowntherunwayonitsfinalflight.
Minuteslater,theplanesmashedintothe14thStreetBridge,only1,200yardsfromthePentagon,destroyingfourautomobilesandkillingfivepeople.Thejetthenfellintotheice-coveredPotomacRiver,bringingallthepassengerstotheirinstantdeathexceptfive—fourpassengersandoneflightattendant—fromthetailsection,whofoundthemselvesgaspingandstrugglingintheicywaters.
Thesefivepeoplehoweversurvivedandtheywereabletosurvivebecauseoffourheroes.Theauthorwrotethisessayinpraiseoftheseheroes,threeofwhomhadriskedtheirlivestorescuethesurvivorsandwereabletolivetotellthestory,butthemanthatreallyheldthewholenation’sattentionwasthefourthonewhohadkeptpushinghislifelineandflotationringstoothersuntilhewentunder.

ThePotomacRiverisoftenreferredtoasthe“Nation’sRiver”,becauseitflowsthroughthenation’scapital,wherethemagnificentmonumentsoftheWashington,Jefferson,andLincolnmemorialsarereflectedinitswaters.ItisoneofthemostbeautifulandbountifulriversontheEastCoastandisknownforitshistoric,scenicandrecreationalsignificance.ItbeginsasasmallspringattheFairfaxStoneinWestVirginia,andwindsitswaythroughthemountainsandvalleysofAppalachia,pastbattlefieldsandoldmanufacturingtowns.Theriverflowsmorethan380milesandgrowstomorethan11mileswideasitreachestheChesapeakeBayatPointLookout,Maryland.
