Inthosedays,however,teawasnotsomethingforanyone.Foracenturyandahalf,itremainedanexpensivedrink.Manybossesservedacupofittotheirworkersinthemiddleofthemorning,thusinventingalastingBritishtradition,the“teabreak”.Butasasocialdrinkoutsidetheworkplace,teawasservedforthenobility(贵族)andforthegrowingmiddleclasses.Amongthosewhohadthemoneyfortea,itbecameverypopularasadrinktobeenjoyedincafésand“teagardens”.
Itwasthe7thDuchessofBedfordwho,inaround1800,startedthepopular“afternoontea”,whichtookplaceataboutfouro’clock.Ataboutthesametime,theEarlofSandwichpopularizedanewwayofeatingbreadwithsomething(e.g.jam)betweenthem,andbeforelong,asmallmealattheendoftheafternoonwithteaandsandwicheshadbecomepartofawayoflife.
Asteabecamemuchcheaperduringthenineteenthcentury,itspopularityspreadrightthroughBritishsociety.Inworking-classhouseholds,itwasservedwiththemainmealoftheday,eatenwhenworkersreturnedhomeafteraday’slabour.Thismealhasbecomeknownas“hightea”.
