ABSTRACT
Inthesupplychain,awarehouseisanessentialcomponentforlinkingthechainpartners.Itisnecessaryoperationcostsofthewarehouse.Therefore,warehousemanagementsystems(WMSs)havebeendevelopedforhandlingwarehouseresourcesandmonitoringwarehouseoperations.However,itisdifficulttoupdatedailyoperationsofinventorylevel,locationsofforkliftsandstockkeepingunits(SKUs)inreal-timebyusingthebar-code-basedormanual-basedwarehousemanagementsystems.Inthispaper,FIDtechnologyisreadingperformanceofboththeactiveandpassiveRFIDapparatus.Withthehelpofthetestingresults,theefficientradiofrequencycoverrangesofthereadersareexaminedforformulatingaradiofrequencyidentificationcase-basedlogisticsresourcemanagementsystem:
(i)asimplificationofRFIDadoptionprocedure,(ii)animprovementinthevisibilityofwarehouseoperationsand(iii)anenhancementoftheproductivityofthewarehouse.ThesuccessfulcaseexampleprovedthefeasibilityofR-LRMsinrealworkingpractice.

1.Introduction
Duetotheeffectsofglobalization,currentsupplychainnetworksareincreasinglycomplex.Logisticianshavetodealwithnumerouschannelpartnerswhomaybelocatedagreatdistanceapartandwhorequestagreaterthaneverdiversityofproducts.andwhoneedtodealwithmorestatutoryrequirementsanddocumentationthaneverbefore(Vogt,Pienaar,&DeWit,2005).Therefore,thefulfillmentofcustomersdemandswithgoodqualityproducts,ontimeproductdeliveryandsuperiorwithgoodqualityproducts,ontimeproductdeliveryandsuperiorlogisticsservicesbecomesdifficulttoachieve.Ingeneral,enterpriseshaveadopteddifferentapproachesformanagingthesupplychainactivitieswhichincludematerialsourcing,productionscheduling,warehousingandproductdistribution.Logisticsresourcemanagement(LRM)isoneoftheapproachesformanagingtheactivitiesofthewholesupplychainefficiently.Itfacilitatestheallocationoflogisticsresourcestoappropriatelogisticsfunctionsandcontrolsthemovementofrawmaterials,work-in-progressandfinishedgoods,fromsupplierstocustomersinanefficientmanner.Indoingthis,supplychainpartnersarekeptsatisfied.
Awarehouseisanessentiallinkbetweentheupstream(production)anddownstream(distribution)entities,andmostofthewarehouseoperationsareeitherlabour-orcapital-intensive.Theperformanceoftheseoperationsnotonlyaffectstheproductivityandoperationcostsofawarehouse,butalsothewholesupplychain.Thus,informationsystemssuchaswarehousemanagementsystems(WMSs)wereadoptedforcollectingdataofwarehouseoperationsinordertosolvevariousproblemsinawarehouse,suchasmaterialhandlingproblems.However,thecurrentWMSsareincapableofprovidingtimelyandaccuratelywarehouseoperationsinformationbecausetheycontainnofeatureofreal-timeandautomaticdataretrieval.Instead,thesystemsrelyheavilyonwarehousestaffmemberstoinputoperationalinformationmanuallyorthroughbar-codesystems.Hence,incorrectinformationisunavoidablyinputfromtimetotimeashumanerrorisinevitable(Sexton,Thomas,&Helmreich,2000).Moreover,itisdifficulttoformulatereliablematerialhandlingsolutionstohandledifferentorderseitherbywarehousestaffmembers(whomaybebiased)orthroughWMSs(Chow,Choy,Lee,&Lau,2006).Therefore,itisessentialtoproposeanintelligentsystemwithreal-timeandautomaticdataretrievalfeaturesforsolvingmaterialhandlingproblems.Fig.1showsthecommonproblemswhichfrequentlyoccurinawarehouseduetohumanerrorandout-of-dateinformation.Basedontheinputofincorrectinformationininventorylevel,warehousecapacityandstoragelocation,inaccuratereportsaregeneratedfromWMSsforwarehousestaffmemberstomakeunreliablematerialhandlingsolutionsformanagingthedailywarehouseoperations.
Inthispaper,asetofRFIDreadingperformancetestsisperformed.ThetagsareplacedindifferentpositionsandattachedtodifferentmaterialsforevaluatingthereadingperformanceoftheactiveandthepassiveRFIDdevices.Basedonthetestresults,theefficientradiofrequencycoverrangesofthereadersareexaminedandthemostsuitablelocationsfortheinstallationoftheRFIDdevicesaredetermined.Besides,aRFIDcase-basedlogisticsresourcemanagementsystem(R-LRMS)isproposedtoimprovetheefficiencyandeffectivenessoforder-pickingoperationsinawarehousebymeansofformulatingareliableRDIDtechnologyimplementationplan.Thiswillenablewarehouseresourcestobelocatedonareal-timebasisandinstantmaterialhandlingsolutionswillbesuggestedforhandlingthecustomerordersautomatically.Thefeatureofreal-timeandautomaticdataretrievalintheproposedsystemissupportbytheRFIDtechnology,whichalsofacilitatesconstructinganeffectivetriangularlocalizationschemetodeterminetheexactlocationsofwarehouseresources.Thecollecteddataisthencomparedwiththeattributesstoredinanembeddedcase-basedenginetodeterminetheappropriatematerialhandlingequipmenttohandletheorder-pickingoperations.Moreover,amaterialhandlingsolutionformulationmodelisconstructedbymathematicalgorithmstogeneratetheshortestpick-upsequencefortheappropriatematerialhandlingequipment.Indoingthis,theobjectivesofmaximizingtheproductivityofwarehouseandminimizingtheoperationcostsinawarehouseareachieved.
Thepaperisdividedintosixsections.Section1istheintroduction.Section2presentsrelatedliteraturereviewsonlogisticsresourcemanagementandthetechnologiesoftrackingitemsandthemanagementandthetechnologiesoftrackingitemsandthemanagementofsuchdata.Section3explainsthedesignmethodologyofR-LRMs,whileinSection4;acasestudyispresentedtoillustratetheimprovementinproductivityinGroupSenseLimited(GSL)withthehelpofR-LRMS.InSection5,ananalysisofthefindingswillbediscussed.Finally,aconclusionabouttheuseofR-LRMSisdrawnandsuggestionsforfutureworkaremadeinSection6.

2.1.Currentapproachinmanaginglogisticsresources
Accordingtokithara(2003)andliuietal.(2005),asupplychainisavaluableinformationsharingchannelamongthesuppliers,manufacturingandstoragefacilities,distributorsandcustomersfor,facilitatingthekeybusinessactivitiesofthesale,productionanddeliveryofaparticularproduct.Thus,themainprincipleofsupplychainmanagement(SCM)istointegrateeffectivelythematerialflowsandrelatedinformationwithinthedemandandsupplyprocesses(Soroor&Tarokh,2006).However,duetotheglobalextensionofsupplychainnetworks,enterprisesneedtocollaboratewithsuppliers,customers,orevencompetitorsindifferenttimezones,acrossnumerousorganizationalboundaries,andinavarietyofcultures.Underthesecircumstances,thechallengeofallocatingproduction,transportation,andinventoryresourcestosatisfydemandisdaunting(Simchi-Levi.Kaminsky&Simchi-Levi.2004).Recenttrendstowardsthemanagementoflogisticsresourceshavethepotentialtominimizetheimpactofthephysicaldispersionofsupplychainmembers.Theobjectiveoflogisticsresourcesmanagement(LRM)istodeterminethemosteffectiveapproachforallocatingtheappropriatelogisticsresourcestodifferentlogisticsfunctions,facilitateinformationflowandshareknowledgethroughasupplypipeline,providefeasiblecollaborativechannelsforsupplychainpartnerstoprovidesuperiorcustomerservices(Ross,2003).InLRM.fivelogisticsoperationsareasarecoveredinasupplychainnetwork.Theseare:
(i)freightcostandservicemanagement,(ii)fleetmanagement,(iii)loadplanning,(iv)routingandscheduling,and,(v)warehousemanagement(Poirier&Bauer.2000),Withintheselogisticsoperationsareas,warehousemanagementisthemostimportantfunctionforlinkingthesupplychainpartnerstoformulatetheseamlessintegrationofthewholesupplychainandforensuringthesmoothflowofproductsinsidethenetwork(Gu.Goetschalckx.&McGinnist2007).Withsuchanarrangement,itisessentialtohandlethewarehouseresources,suchasstockkeepingunits(SKUs),palletsandracks,pallettrucksandforklifts,andwarehousestaffmembers,efficientlyandeffectivelyinordertohavesmoothmanufacturingoperations,toreduceinventory,lowerprocessing,storage,andtransshipmentcosts,andincreaseproductivitywithinfacilities(Vogtetal.t2005).Withinthechain,currently,wareho
