WhowasClaraBarton?
Formostpeople,theeasyanswertothatquestionisthatshewasanurseduringtheCivilWar.ThetruthisthatherWorkduringthewarrepresentsasmallpartofalong,extraordinarylife.Bartonnevermarriedandneverhadchildren.Insteadofdevotingherselftoonefamily,sheworkedmuchmorewidely.Andwhileshefocusedontheneedsofhumanity,shebecamefamousatatimewhenwomenwerenotexpectedtohavefulllivesoutsidetheirhomesandfamilies.
Bartonwas;describedasanextremelyshychild.Butsheisrememberedtodayasafearlessadvocateforpeopleinneed.Shealsometpowerfulmen-lawmakers,generals,andworldleaders-whobecamesupportersinherworktohelpothers.
WhentheCivilWarbeganin1861,HenryWilsonmetBartonwhentheybothtriedtoorganizesuppliesandaidforinjuredsoldiersarrivinginthenation'scapital.AsthechairmanoftheMilitaryAffairsCommittee,Wilsonknewhowthegovernmentfunctionedandhowtomakethingshappen.Bartonknewshewantedtobeactivelyinvolvedinhelpingsoldiers.Workingasateam,WilsonandBartonaidedeachotherintheireffortsduringthewar.
MajorGeneralBenjaminF.ButlermetBartonduringthewar,too.HewascommanderoftheArmyoftheJames,whichfoughtinVirginiaandNorthCarolina.HeputBartoninchargeofnursinginamobilehospital.WhenhelaterbecamegovernorofMassachusetts,heappointedBartoninchargeoftheMassachusettsReformatoryPrison.
DuringBarton'sfirstvisittoEurope,shemetSwissdoctorLouisAppia.AppiawasoneofthefoundersoftheInternationalCommitteeoftheRedCross.AlthoughBartonhadnotheardoftheorganization,AppiawasfamiliarwithBarton'sworkduringtheCivilWar.TheirmeetinggaveBartontheideatoestablishtheAmericanRedCross.ShespentadecadepersuadingAmericanleaderstosupporttheorganization.

Blindandsightedparticipantsagedbetween21and79tookpartin20two-to-three-hourtrainingsessionsoverthestudyperiod.Blindparticipantsalsotookpartinathree-monthfollow-upsurveyassessingtheeffectsofthetrainingontheirdailylife.
Theresearchersfoundthatpeoplewhoareblindandthosewhoaresightedimprovedconsiderablyonallmeasures.Inthefollow-upsurvey,allparticipantswhowereblindreportedimprovedmobility,and83percentreportedbetterindependenceandwell-being.
Theresultssuggesttheabilitytolearnclick-basedecholocationisn'tstronglylimitedbyageorlevelofvision,theresearcherssay,andthiscanpotentiallybenefitpeoplewithvisionlossorintheearlystagesofprogressivevisionloss.
