Throughallthis,Ilearnedsomuch.Icametovalueeducation,familyandfaith.Iworkedhardinschool,andearnedgoodgrades.Ilearnedfrommymother'sexample(shewentbacktoschoolafterthreechildrenandadivorce)thatitisimportantforawomantogotocollegeandnotdependonaman.IcametovalueextendedfamilysupportanddevelopedacloserelationshipwithmygrandparentsandcousinsbecauseIwaswiththemsomuchwhilemymotherworked.
Last,myfaithbecameverystrong.Althoughmymotherwasverybusy,shemadesureweallwenttochurchtogethereverySunday.Mostimportant,wedidnotblameGodforoursituation.Instead,wethankedHimforthegoodthingsinourlives.Weweregratefulforthepeoplewhocaredaboutus,fornotbeingonthestreets,andforgoodhealthwhenwedidnothavehealthinsurance.Myparents'divorcecausedhardshipsandpain,butitwasalsoanexperiencethatIwouldnotchangebecauseofhowmuchIlearned.

Afteradrearyday'swork,Ifilledthetubwithnearlyscaldingwater.Iinchedeachtoeintogetusedtothetemperature.Ithadbeensolong.Itwasasiftimehadpaused.ItwasimpossibleformetorememberthelasttimeIappreciatedasimpletubofhotwater.NeveroncedidIthinkhowprivilegedIwastohaveahome,afamilyandlife.

ThatdayIhadmetsomanywhowouldgivetheirrightarmtolivemylife,andallIcouldthinkaboutwasmyowninsignificanttroubles.SoonenoughmyagonywouldendandIwouldbelivinginmyhomeagain.Unfortunately,thisisn'ttrueforeveryone.
Childrenstarve,homesarebombed,gunsarefired,andpovertyruinsmanylives.Mostadolescentsfortunateenoughtohavefood,familyandahomedon'trealizethatthesearegiftsfromGod.Lifeisagiftthatweoftentakeforgranted.Losingsomuchforcedmetolookatlifefromanewangle.
Thedaytragedymadeitsunwantedvisittoburndownmyhome,Irealizedmyemptyhouseisbetterthannone,mydistraughtfamilyisbetterthannofamily,andmylifeisbetterthansomanyotherswhohavefarless.It'sironichowsuchatragedy(andabath)taughtmethegreatestlifelessonofall.
ALessonRemembered
Atfirstmyfingerswereawkward.Theyfumbledcarelesslyandsloppilylikefiveuncookedfrenchfries.IwasinthefifthgradewhenIfirstdippedmyfingersintotheendlessoceanofexpressionandallowedmyhandstogrowavoice.

Oncetherestofmyclassmatessettledintheirseats,shebegan.Shedidnotspeak.Herhandsflewaboutgracefullyasshesigned,"Hello.MynameMs.Lewison.Yournamewhat?
