MainlyItrytoremindthemthattheroadaheadisalongoneandthatitwillhavemoreunexpectedturnsthantheythink.Therewillbeplentyoftimetochangejobs,changecareers,changewholeattitudesandapproaches.Theydon'twanttohearsuchnews.Theywantamap—rightnow—thattheycanfollowdirectlytocareersecurity,financialsecurity,socialsecurityand,presumably,aprepaidgrave.
WhatIwishforallstudentsissomereleasefromthegrimgripofthefuture.Iwishthemachancetoenjoyeachsegmentoftheireducationasanexperienceinitselfandnotasatiresomerequirementinpreparationforthenextstep.Iwishthemtherighttoexperiment,totripandfall,tolearnthatdefeatisaseducationalasvictoryandisnottheendoftheworld.
Mywish,ofcourse,isnaive.OneofthefewrightsthatAmericadoesnotproclaimistherighttofail.Achievementisthenationalgod,worshippedinourmedia—themillion-dollarathlete,thewealthyexecutive—andglorifiedinourpraiseofpossessions.Inthepresenceofsuchapotentstatereligion,theyoungaregrowingupold.
Iseefourkindsofpressureworkingoncollegestudentstoday:
economicpressure,parentalpressure,peerpressure,andself-inducedpressure.It'seasytolookaroundforbadguys—toblamethecollegesforchargingtoomuchmoney,theprofessorsforassigningtoomuchwork,theparentsforpushingtheirchildrentoofar,thestudentsfordrivingthemselvestoohard.Buttherearenobadguys,onlyvictims.
Todayitisnotunusualforastudent,evenonewhoworksparttimeatcollegeandfulltimeduringthesummer,tohaveaumulated$5,000inloansafterfouryears—loansthatthestudentmuststarttorepaywithinoneyearaftergraduation(andincidentally,notalltheseloansarelow-interest,asmanynon-studentsbelieve).Encouragedatthemencementceremonytogoforthintotheworld,studentsarealreadybehindastheygoforth.Howcantheynotfeelunderpressurethroughoutcollegetoprepareforthisdayofreckoning?
WomenatYaleareunderevenmorepressurethanmentojustifytheirexpensiveeducationtothemselves,theirparents,andsociety.Foralthoughtheyleavecollegesuperblyequippedtobringfreshleadershiptotraditionallymalejobs,societyhasn'tyetcaughtupwiththisfact.
Alongwitheconomicpressuregoesparentalpressure.Inevitably,thetwoaredeeplyintertwined.Iseestudentstakingpremedicalcourseswithjoylessdetermination.Theygoofftotheirlabsasiftheyweregoingtothedentist.ItsaddensmebecauseIknowtheminothercornersoftheirlifeascheerfulpeople.

Peerpressureandself-inducedpressurearealsointertwined,andtheybeginfromtheverystartoffreshmanyear."IhadafreshmanstudentI'llcallLinda,"oneinstructortoldme,"whocameinandsaidshewasunderterriblepressurebecauseherroommate,Barbara,wasmuchbrighterandstudiedallthetime.Icouldn'ttellherthatBarbarahadeintwohoursearliertosaythesamethingaboutLinda."
Thestoryisalmostfunny—exceptthatit'snot.It'sasymptomofallthepressuresputtogether.Wheneverystudentthinkseveryotherstudentisworkingharderanddoingbetter,theonlysolutionistostudyharderstill.Iseestudentsgoingofftothelibraryeverynightafterdinnerandingbackwhenitclosesatmidnight.Iwishtheycouldsometimesforgetabouttheirpeersandgotoamovie.Iheartherattlingoftypewritersinthehoursbeforedawn.Iseethetensionintheireyeswhenexamsareapproachingandpapersaredue:

Probablytheywon't.Theywillgetsick.Theywillsleep.Theywilloversleep.Theywillbugout.
I'vepaintedtoogrimaportraitoftoday'sstudents,makingthemseemtoosolemn.That'sonlyhalfoftheirstory;theotherhalfisthatthesestudentsarenicepeople,andeasytolike.They'requicktolaughandtoofferfriendship.They'remoreconsiderateofoneanotherthananystudentgenerationI'veeverknown.IfI'vedescribedthemprimarilyasdrivencreatureswholargelyignorethejoyfulsideoflife,it'sbecausethat'swheretheproblemis—notonlyatYalebutthroughoutAmericaneducation.It'swhyIthinkweshouldallbeworriedaboutthevaluesthatarenurturingagenerationsofearfulofriskandsogoal-obsessedatsuchanearlyage.
Itellstudentsthatthereisnoone"right"waytogetahead—thateachofthemisadifferentperson,startingfromadifferentpointandboundforadifferentdestination.Itellthemthatchangeishealthyandthatpeopledon'thavetofitintopre-arrangedslots.Oneofmywaysoftellingthemistoinvitemenandwomenwhohaveachievedsuessoutsidetheacademicworldtoeandtalkinformallywithmystudentsduringtheyear.Iinviteheadsofpanies,editorsofmagazines,politicians,Broadwayproducers,artists,writers,economists,photographers,scientists,historians—amixedbagofachievers.
Iaskthemtosayafewwordsabouthowtheygotstarted.Thestudentsalwaysassumethattheystartedintheirpresentprofessionandknewallalongthatitwaswhattheywantedtodo.Butinfact,mostofthemgotwheretheyarebyacircuitousroute,aftermanysidetrips.Thestudentsarestartled.Theycanhardlyconceiveofacareerthatwasnotpreplanned.TheycanhardlyimagineallowingthehandofGodorchancetoleadthemdownsomeunforeseentrail.
