Thefamilyisimportanttopeopleallovertheworldalthoughthestructureofthefamilyisquitedifferentfromonecountrytoanother.IntheUnitedStates,asinmanycountriesintheworld,thefamilyischanging.

Therearebasicallytwotypesoffamilies:

nuclearfamiliesandextendedfamilies.Thenuclearfamilyusuallyconsistsoftwoparentsandtheirchildren.Themotherandfatherformthenucleus,orcenter,ofanuclearfamily.Thechildrenstayinthenuclearfamilyuntiltheygrowupandmarry.Thentheyformnewnuclearfamilies.Theextendedfamilyisverylarge.Thereareoftenmanynuclearfamiliesinoneextendedfamily.Thenuclearfamilybecomesmoreimportantthantheextendedfamilyasthesocietyindustrializes.

Inpost-industrialsocietiesliketheUnitedStates,eventhenuclearfamilyischanging.Thenuclearfamilyisbecomingsmallerasparentswantfewerchildren,andthenumberofchildlessfamiliesisincreasing.Andatthesametime,peoplearenowlivelonger.Asaresultofsmallerfamiliesandmoreolderpeople,lifewillchangeinmanyways,suchas:
