Accordingtothedatatheypresented,theresearchersfoundthattheplayerswhohadheadedtheballmorethanabout1,100timesintheprevious12monthsshowedsignificantlossofwhitematterinpartsoftheirbrainsinvolvedwithmemory,attentionandtheprocessingofvisualinformation,comparedwithplayerswhohadheadedtheballless.
Thispatternofwhitematterlossis“similartothoseseenintraumatic(外伤的)braininjury”,likethatafteraseriousconcussion,theresearchersreported,eventhoughonlyoneoftheseplayerswasreportedtohaveeverexperiencedaconcussion.
